Ah Huat jio (invited) me to join him at Lao Wu Mutton Soup @ 532 Ang Mo Kio which is a stall in Sunday F & B kopitiam. 老吴記's mutton soup is nice - its flavours are mild with neither pungent mutton gaminess nor strong herbal and ginger taste. Hence, it is extremely popular.

Buddy Aaron called ahead ☎ 9085 3832 for a queue number. We waited 45 minutes for our food. Without calling ahead, waiting time is at least 1.5 hours during peak hours.

The menu is over head just below the big signboard. There's rib, tripe, tendon / shank and ball, all soup.

Uncle 老吴 and folks at the stall were friendly though very busy.

We started sanely with this order for two.

Then, we bumped into Benny, and Wee Kiat joined us later. Then things started to unravel as we revelled in mutton soup with full relish i.e. ordered a few more big bowls 😄 (Making excuses for the messy table.)

The brownish soup was the watery, light bodied type with mild savoury sweet flavours with just traces of herb, cilantro, ginger and mutton taste.

The meat was fall-off-the-bone tender and juicy. It was mildly sweet juicy with
subtle herbal and gamey taste. The balanced gentle flavours seem to be widely appealing, judging by Lao Wu's popularity.

The mutton balls were likewise mildly flavoured - savoury sweet with just a trace of mutton taste. It had a nice springy chew to the bite.

Lamb shank with smooth soft tendon. Aaron was sucking up the bone marrow with a straw like a happy child.

The average quality rice grains were done very nicely. I like the fluffy tender nutty texture and clean taste. Enjoyed it much by pouring in the mutton soup to make a "porridge".

Lao Wu Mutton Soup 老吴記羊肉汤 is nice for folks who like lamb gaminess only in very gentle packages complemented by slight savoury, herbal flavours and taste of ginger, cilantro etc.

If you like to moderate the already slight gaminess further, they have two chili sauces - one garlicky spicy sourish, and another spicy sourish sans garlic.

  1. My all time favorite outlet. Used to queue for an hour or more.
Nowadays called in advance and collect a number on the phone.
Arrived on time and served less than 5 minutes. Hooray.
