Ikan Bakar Tampin is an old name in traditional spicy grilled fish and seafood or ikan bakar in Johor Bahru.
Ikan Bakar Tampin is one of the most popular ikan bakar stalls in Johor Bahru with lots of people at this simple restaurant on a Saturday evening. The restaurant is converted from a family home along Jalan Dato Sulaiman. (They used to be around the corner at Jalan Abdullah Tahir.)
Parking spaces are very limited, so be prepared to walk a little 😜
The signature dishes are displayed on the wall. There's Portuguese style grilled fish, sambal lady's finger, fried la la clams, slipper prawns, sambal squid, white pepper crab, grilled fish, spicy sambal noodles, and sambal grilled stingray.

Three of us had sambal grilled stingray, sambal lady's finger and petai, asam pedas squid, and grilled slipper prawns.
The fresh squid cut into rings were baked in a mildly tangy spicy savoury asam pedas sauce wrapped in foil (RM20 2016 price).
The slab of grilled stingray wing on a banana leaf was smothered with a thick blanket of sambal chili (RM30 2016 price).
The stingray is fresh, tender and juicy. The sambal chili had a robust dried shrimp crustacean savouriness, with just a slight spiciness. The sambal chili was heavy with grease. I felt the strong sambal flavours overpower the subtle natural flavours of the stingray.
We had two grilled slipper prawns 虾婆 (RM44 for these two at 2016 price).
The slipper prawns done 原味 were simply sprinkled with a bit of salt and grilled with oil on a banana leaf.
The slipper prawn was meaty and slightly sweet. It was big like a lobster tail but softer and tastes a bit different.
Crunchy, juicy grilled lady's finger and petai (stinky beans) with sambal chili (RM12 at 2016 price).
👍 Ikan Bakar Tampin's sambal chili flavours are a bit strong for me but the ingredients are fresh, prices are reasonable, the airy environment is comfortable, and this old brand has a large loyal local following.
