AS-Ikan-Bakar-Tepi-Masjid-Jamek-Jalil-Hassan-Kampung-Pasir-Putih-Johor

I was driving pass Masjid Jamek Jalil Hassan in Kampung Pasir Putih when the corner of my eye caught sight of tell tale white smoke from an ikan bakar stall at the intersection. I instinctively pulled over to check out this potential good makan (eating) place.

Gerai Ayong at Tepian Tebrau hawker centre is another long time JB people's favourite which I finally checked off my Must Eat list 😄 Now, I have moved it to my IWBB list - I will be back list 👍

JB People's Favourite Food List. Tip Top Ikan Bakar. Tepian Tebrau

Tip Top Ikan Bakar is probably the most famous BBQ stingray stall in Johor Bahru (yet it took me six years of blogging, one stall at a time before I got here 😂 ). The 30 year old stall certainly lives up to its formidable reputation, especially its killer sambal chili.

Stumbled upon this really good ikan bakar stall today at BR 新国花 coffee shop in Permas Jaya. I've been here at BR coffee shop a few times before but somehow missed this 999 Ikan Bakar stall. It's one of my favourite ikan bakar stalls in Malaysia and Singapore now. For lucky JB folks, this brilliant stall in Permas Jaya is so accessible 😄

We planned a trip here at Pekan Nanas to try Tao Yuan's legendary grilled stingray (which we missed the last visit). During our previous visit, we arrived at 6:30pm but Tao Yuan's famous grilled stingray was already sold out :-(  This time we arrived at 4:30pm, 30 minutes before opening time ;-D

No. 1 Ikan Bakar 烧鱼 (BBQ Seafood) in Taman Universiti, Skudai, Malaysia

Taman Universiti No. 1 kopitiam seemed to be foodies' ground zero in the town's busy commercial centre.

The many stalls here at No. 1 kopitiam are the favourite hangouts for UTM (Universiti Technologi Malaysia) students and residents. The stalls here offer tasty meals at very affordable prices in causal, relaxed surroundings.

No. 1 Ikan Bakar is a favourite here among students especially for their affordable RM6 dinner set.

No. 1 Ikan Bakar's dinner set consists of a slab of stingray, garnished with lady's fingers and topped with a fried egg and their special sambal chili. Everything in, all for RM6, No. 1's dinner set is very popular with students.

Each dinner set gets half of the good sized baby stingray.

Besides the set dinner, we can also choose our own seafood. Our Ikan Bakar order came in a large slab of stingray and squid garnished with generous amounts of lady's fingers and petai beans, smothered in a thick blanket of sambal chili with everything grilled on a bed of banana leaf.

The most striking thing about No. 1 Ikan Bakar was their signature sambal chili. According to the boss, MR Sim, the sambal chili is a blend of 22 spices and herbs. The sambal felt gritty from the ground ingredients and was neither too spicy nor too salty. I liked it.

No. 1 Ikan Bakar's sambal chili is so popular that MR Sim sells them in 360gram containers at RM10 each.

No. 1 Ikan Bakar's grilled seafood is also served with chinchalok, chopped onions and calamansi; something that is not often seen nowadays. The chinchalok sauce has that characteristic fusion of tangy, sweet and salty tastes.

Personally, all these spicy hot sauces numbs the taste buds a little and overpowers the relatively bland flavour of stingray flesh. Put another way, the stingray was reliant on the sambal and chinchalok to lift its taste level.

I love this lady's fingers, petai and squid combination with hot sambal chili.

I have been getting lots of suggestions to try out the many stalls in Taman Universiti. For sure, I am going to be at Taman Universiti many more times :)

BBQ Fishman 烧鱼堂 @ Restoran 777 Food Centre, Taman Ungku Tun Aminah, Johor Bahru, Malaysia

BBQ Fishman 烧鱼堂 ikan bakar stingray at Restoran 777 food centre in Taman Ungku Tun Aminah (TUTA) is one of my favourites in Johor Bahru. The slab of fresh stingray cooked and served on a banana leaf was slightly charred on the outside and still juicy and tender inside. Yummy!

The bakar stingray come with a thick spread of sambal chili. Fortunately, the sambal chili was not stinging spicy - it was just a blend of moderate spicy, and slightly tangy and sweet with the fragrance of lemon grass and spices. The stingray was also garnished with generous toppings of lady's fingers and petai, my favourite stink beans :).

We also had squid baked in Portuguese style. The squid cut into rings were baked and served in aluminium foil that looked like a pillow case.

The squid rings were submerged in a little sloshy pool of sambal chili gravy. If you like your seafood/ fish/ stingray to be soft inside and out, ask for it to be cooked in the Portuguese style. The sambal chili gravy was spicy, sweet, and distinctly tangy.

We also indulged in a plate of seafood fried rice. It was good!

The savoury rice grains were discrete and was not oily at all. Complements the BBQ seafood very well and a good alternative to plain steamed white rice.

I requested for a bit of sambal chili to go with the fried rice and unexpectedly got this hot sambal chili served on a banana leaf :) WOW! delightful service :)

Ah Hua 亚华 is the boss of BBQ Fishman 烧鱼堂 which has been in business here in Restoran 777 Food Centre for eight years.

There are plenty of fresh seafood to choose from and the most popular are stingray, chincharu fish and squids.

Restoran 777 Food Centre offers typical Malaysian style open air al fresco dining under the moon and stars.

Dozens of food stalls ring a large airy centre court which is the dining area. Casual, cheerful and enjoyable on a cool night, and really inexpensive too. There's even free movies and wifi!

I've been thinking.... moon, stars, cool breeze, free movie, free wifi, delicious food at affordable prices, family, good friends - what more can a man/ lady ask for? :)

I will be spending a few more nights exploring the sights, sounds, aroma and tastes of Restoran 777 Food Centre.
