Makan (eating) buddy Jeff keeps reminding me to pay a visit to the KL pork noodle stall at Hoa Kee 好记 kopitiam in Taman Gaya. It's the favourite of a few foodie friends too.

So, I got up early this beautiful Sunday morning and found ourselves at busy Hoa Kee kopitiam at Jalan Gaya 25 at 8:00am.

The KL pork noodle stall is one of the popular stalls at Hoa Kee 好记 kopitiam. This corner kopitiam has a few good stalls like the fish soup and the yong tau foo. There are other stalls here like chicken rice etc which I would like to try too next time. Most of the stalls were extremely busy this Sunday morning.

Boss Mr Alvin Lai hails from KL (where else?) and learned his craft from the KL pork noodle stalls at his family's kopitiams.

I ordered a kway teow (RM5.50) - waiting time was about 30 minutes. On first look, it seemed pretty ordinary. Rice ribbon noodles sitting submerged in a bowl of cloudy broth, covered with a jumble of minced pork, liver slices, lean meat slices, intestines, some greens and cabbage.

But, I like the kway teow soup so much that I ordered a second round, this time with lou shi fan (rat tail noodles 老鼠粉), also for RM5.50.

Why do I like this?

First things first.

The broth was full bodied with deep, layered savouriness balanced with natural porky sweetness. The layered savouriness came from pork bones and chicken, while the sweetness from the fresh mince pork, liver, intestines and juicy cabbages. The dash of fried garlic oil and crispy bits added another flavour dimension to the tasty broth.

The tender fresh minced pork with a mix of fat and lean meat adding sweetness to the broth.

Liver slices were cooked through but still remains tender.

Bouncy pork intestine, and the juicy cabbage there added another layer of sweetness to the broth.

Remember to ask for these crispy lard cracklings 😃

3-Star (out of 5). The savoury sweet broth is the winner at this KL pork noodle stall at Hoa Kee kopitiam at Jalan Gaya 25 in JB. Generous amounts of pork and other ingredients - not so photogenic, but everything is fresh and delicious. The first pot of broth empties early, so it is best to be here by 9:00am.

Alvin also does a crazy rich KL style curry laksa which you must not miss 👈 click
