Crazy Rich Laksa @ Hao Kee 好记 in Taman Gaya in Johor Bahru ⭐⭐⭐⭐

I am no Crazy Rich Asian but I am very happy because I just had crazy rich laksa at Hao Kee White Coffee 好记 kopitiam in Taman Gaya, JB. Fifty years of eating curry laksa in Singapore and Malaysia, this laksa in JB makes me feel like a Crazy Rich Asian 😄 No other curry laksa comes close in richness, tastefully.

This curry laksa is from Chyuan Ji Pork Mee & Curry Mee stall at Hoa Kee White Coffee kopitiam. I like Chyuan Ji's KL style pork mee and had already blogged about it two years ago (in 2016). This was my first time trying Chyuan Ji's curry laksa which is known as curry mee in KL.

Stallholder Alvin hails from KL where he was helping his family (in-laws) run a coffee shop there for over 10 years. The KL style curry mee he serves at Chyuan Ji is based on his mother-in-law's recipe. 

The noodles, fried pork skin, char siew, fried bean curd, blanched long beans, everything was smothered under the curry which looked like a wet creamy sauce (price RM6).

Alvin told me that he had no blood cockles today as there was no supply. Yesterday was a public holiday, it being Malaysia's Hari Merdeka (Independence Day).

First things first, the curry which is the soul of curry mee that holds everything together.

It was crazy rich. The curry stock was heavy with fresh coconut milk. The sweet stock and sweet coconut milk was infused with mild heat from the blend of spices. The sweetness was not cloying at all.

It tasted great. I never felt so rich before. It feels good to be crazy rich 😜

The curry was a blend of chicken stock with coconut milk and spices. Everything was freshly cooked in situ at the stall. Alvin's uses 8kg of freshly squeezed coconut milk everyday 😮

Alvin fries his own spices following his mother-in-law's recipe and technique.

The noodles, spongy fried bean curd, spongy fried pork skin, soft crunchy blanched long beans, all added their own sweetness and textures to the dish. Overall, the dominant flavour was layers of sweetness overlaid with mild spiciness.


Special mention for this char siew because it tasted so good - tender, juicy, sweet with subtle underlying porky sweetness.

4-Star (out of 5). I felt like a Crazy Rich Asian eating this crazy rich laksa (KL style curry mee). Delicious fresh rich sweetness marries gentle spiciness at Chyuan Ji stall at Hoa Kee White Coffee kopitiam in Taman Gaya, JB.

I shall be back very soon to have this curry mee with blood cockles. (I actually wanted to write about this curry mee only after eating it with blood cockles, but I can't wait to tell you about it - too excited lah.)

  1. Tried today 16th Sept 2018 Nothing great about this store , diluted gravy . 4 out of 5 slices of char siew is 100% fats .
    咖喱汤头,淡淡水水的 。一点都不浓,5 片叉烧中 4 片 100% 肥肉 。 不知道为什么要介绍这种水准的curry ��
