On 20 Dec 2016, Johor Kaki blog quietly celebrated it's fifth anniversary (actually I forgot lah π ). I can't believe it's 5 years already. It seemed like yesterday - really. I appreciate your support since the day the blog was launched 5 years ago. It's your support that kept me going. It gives me the energy to keep doing the same thing and still feel fresh and energised everyday. With your support, Johor Kaki blog now consistently receives at least 30,000 page views a day leading to at least 1,000,000 page views a month.
Who are Johor Kaki readers?
Most of you live in Singapore, followed closely by Malaysia residents. Readers from the USA and Australia are next, mostly people who once lived in Singapore or Johor and tourists. Indonesia residents make up the fifth largest group.
These are the posts you like the most in 2016 π

1. You like the post on Sumo Big Prawn Noodle best - it was seen over 200,000 times since it was posted on 5 Oct 2016. You are definitely interested in innovative hawker food in Singapore hawker centres even if there is a price premium - Sumo's lobster noodle costs SGD25 a serving π± The youthful stall holder Desmond took a bold gamble but he read the market correctly, and man..... it paid off handsomely. Well Done πππ Fans are still queuing at Sumo Big Prawn Noodle as we enter the new year.

2. Second place went to the list of 100 best hawkers in Johor Bahru. This is the online version of the Find Dining with Johor Kaki book published in Oct 2016. We are able to distribute the 150 page full colour book free of charge thanks to generous sponsors, publisher MAGistrate and developer UMLand for bearing the considerable costs. Still, many people are unable to get a copy of the book yet, so this online version comes in handy. Meanwhile, we will continue to distribute the book through book signing sessions so that it will reach as many people as possible. Do look out for future dates, if you would like a copy.

3. Third place went to my blog post on the Samyang Extremely Spicy Chicken Flavour Instant Noodle. I first heard about these crazy instant noodles from buddy Gwen. There was a world wide craze to try the ultra spicy Korean instant noodles π₯π₯π₯ The fiery fad that set many tongues burning and wagging worldwide in 2016 has cooled down but I still love these delicious noodles. I am still enjoying a pack, now and then π Try it if your haven't π

4. The post on the salted egg croissant at Seven Oaks in JB took fourth place. Seven Oaks was the first bakery to bring the fad to Johor. Many of you and your friends went crazy over it. Demand was overwhelming and Seven Oaks had to limit the number of croissants each customer can buy. Many friends come over from Singapore because Seven Oaks' croissants cost just a fraction of the Singapore ones and they were just as good here. The fad quieted down considerably. You soon got bored and have since moved on to several successions of fleeting "big things....." that also came and went in 2016 π

5. The old post from more than a year ago in Apr 2015 on the Hong Kong Soya Sauce Chicken stall in Singapore's Chinatown came in fifth. Many people noticed that old post after the stall was awarded a Michelin Star, a year later in Jul 2016 - one of the first two hawker stalls in the world to win the honour. Congratulations again to Mr Chan, the stall owner who until the Michelin Star was well known mainly among his regulars who are mostly elderly folk from the neighbourhood πππ

6. 2016 is the year that we sadly lose Uncle Seng, one of Johor Bahru's most loved heritage hawkers. When news of Uncle Seng's demise broke, many people read this old post about his noodles. Uncle Seng's specialty was Teochew noodles and braised meats. For nearly 60 years rain or shine, Uncle Seng stoically cooked Teochew noodles at his little stall in downtown JB - faithfully the old way, according to the delicious recipe pioneered by his uncle, Lao Di. Now, Lao Di's style of Teochew noodle is sold by Lao Di's grandson and his former staff Ah Ngiap.

7. The post on The Catch came in seventh. The Catch was one of the first restaurants in JB to feature the Louisiana boil style of serving seafood. Several other restaurants have jumped on the bandwagon, since.

8. No. 8 is the blog post on ιΏδ», a local legend in the world of JB fried noodles with wok hei. My thanks to buddy Keng Cheong for the tip off. I rely heavily on tips from passionate Johor foodies like you on where are the best eating places in Johor π

9. My first recipe post came in number 9 π I shared my family recipe which we have used for decades. It's an easy recipe on how to make Hong Kong soya sauce chicken. Have you tried it? It's easy to get a good result, even for first timers. HK soya sauce chicken is probably the easiest Michelin Star dish to make a decent version at home.

10. I wrote this post for an upcoming food trail with my friends - it's to let everyone see the same picture and be on the same page when we are on our food trail. One of my nightmares when visiting JB as a group is when members of the party get separated from the main body π With this I hope to keep the group together or at least help stragglers rejoin more easily. I think I should post more food trail itineraries. Would welcome your ideas on this.

11. My post on an honest durian seller in JB was eleventh placed. It was the first time that I recommended a durian seller after bad experiences in other places. An earlier blog post from 2013, on how to avoid being cheated when buying durians actually ranks number 2 for the most read Johor Kaki post of all time. Honest durian sellers are definitely in demand π

12. The post on Famous JB 101 Firewokz wrapped up the top 12 most read posts in Johor Kaki blog in 2016. Famous JB 101 is a newly opened zhi char stall in Bukit Batok. The owners managed to persuade the head chef of a popular JB restaurant to come out of retirement and head Famous JB 101. The owners of Famous JB 101 boosted the blog post from their own Facebook page (at their own initiative without prior arrangement with me). Facebook boost is a proven, cost effective way for businesses to extend the reach of their web content. Businesses can target specific audiences to maximise returns on investment with Facebook boost.
May I take this opportunity to wish you the best in the year ahead and thank you for your heartfelt support. It means a lot to me π
Please share with me what you would like to see more in Johor Kaki blog in 2017 π You know that I take your suggestions very seriously π
HAPPY NEW YEAR π
