Buddy Mark who is himself in the char siew business suggested that I should try the char siew at Spring Golden in Shah Alam.

We found Spring Golden which is 30 minutes drive from KL city centre without traffic quite easily, thanks to the WAZE App. Since I first started using WAZE, I kept wondering how I survived KL before the days of GPS navigation Apps 😕

We arrived at 10am to avoid the lunch crowd and also to give ourselves time to swing over afterwards to Meng Kee in nearby Glenmarie (for another round of char siew 😂 ).

I got a bit anxious when I didn't see any char siew hanging in the window 😰

I was relieved to spot these char siew lying flat on steel trays.

When I asked why they weren't hung up on hooks like at other char siew places, I was told that laying them out flat prevents draft from drying out the char siew. It's to keep the char siew as moist as possible for the customers 😃

We just ordered char siew for two and a plate of kosong noodles to share as we wanted to save some stomach space for our next food stop. (Spring Golden also serves siew yok, roast duck and roast chicken, but we have to save that for our next visit.)

The total bill came to RM29 for this.

The char siew came cut in thick pieces which is the way I like it 😋

The thick chunks of char siew have a slight crisp from the sticky caramelised layer outside - you know, something like that brittlely crisp on the top of a crème brûlée, but finer. There is a bit of char at the edges like all good char siew must have 😃

The marbled meat in fairly equal portions of lean meat and fat - poon fei sow 半肥瘦 as we say in Cantonese. The piece of char siew was spongy and juicy as in I can feel the wet juices when I bite into the spongy cube of roast pork.

The char siew is a balance of savoury and sweet flavours, leaning slightly on the sweeter side. It's a very good char siew indeed, just like Mark said. Thank you bro, for the recommendation.

The egg noodles were done soft al dente, with a nice light spring to the bite. The savoury sweet sauce with a little porky taste was lovely too.

4-Star (out of 5). In Kuala Lumpur, which is blessed with too many excellent char siew shops, Spring Golden's char siew still stands out. It has nice juicy soft texture with sweet savoury flavours. Pricing is at a slight premium.
