็่ๅฏๅฃ้้ฃฏ has been at this corner coffee in Taman Johor Jaya Teratai for over 30 years. It has a multi-generation local following built over the decades without much social media hype.
็่ๅฏๅฃ้้ฃฏ doesn't have an English name. For the purpose of this article, I translated it to Looi Heng Koka Chicken Rice.
Teratai is a quieter part of Johor Jaya compared to the busier Dedap, Bakawali and Ros Merah sections of Taman Johor Jaya. But, there are a few well established eating places here such as Nasi Padang JJ, Fei Long Fish Soup, Ah Lek Bak Kut Teh (one of my favourites in Johor), and Ah Huang Teochew Kway Teow Thng (soupy noodles). There are other good food stalls which I shall taste and document, one at a time.
Today, it was ็่ๅฏๅฃ้้ฃฏ Looi Heng Koka Chicken Rice stall.
My RM8 serving of chicken over rice. Soup and condiments provided free.
Quite a lot of meat over the rice. It was splashed with a mildly savoury sweet watery brown sauce.
The meat was soft tender juicy with a bit of squeaky chewiness to the bite - balanced texture. I like this in-between texture as I don't really enjoy mushy soft chicken, nor do I like tough stringy chewy meat.
There was a delicate layer of fatty jelly between the meat and skin. The meat, fat and skin tasted sweet savoury with a subtle chicky flavour.
The rice was tender nutty with subtle savoury sweet flavours. Neither wet nor overly greasy. I like.
There were three bottles of dark sauce - not sure if they were all the same as I tried only one.
The dark sauce I tried was thick and heavy like a syrup. It was intensely sweet savoury umami, well balanced blend and I enjoyed it with the rice.
Lady boss told me that it was concocted with young customers in mind but have since became ็่ๅฏๅฃ้้ฃฏ's signature draw.
The spicy relish was good too - zesty tangy, spicy hot, savoury salty. Lots of lime, chili pepper, garlic, ginger, and other aromatics.
The spicy relish was hand made right there at the stall using market fresh ingredients. We can taste and appreciate all the hard work in the flavours of the fresh relish.
I must say something about the cucumber because I can't eat cucumber with skin ๐ as it is bitter and chewy like paper. But, at ็่ๅฏๅฃ้้ฃฏ I enjoyed it and ate them all as they were meticulously skinned. Only sweetness in the juicy, crunchy, skinless wedges of cucumber.
At ็่้้ฃฏ, they go the extra mile and it showed in the taste of their chicken rice and everything that came with it.
The chicken soup served with the chicken.
Peppery chicky sweet savoury with gojiberries (and possibly preserved vegetable).
I didn't try the char siew this time but they looked ugly enough and most likely seriously good. Shall try them (the fatty cut) next time.
Pardon me ๐คญ I enjoyed and finished everything, leaving only bits of bones.
There are other food stalls at Yu Sheng coffee shop which I shall try next time.
