✍ 7 Aug 2024. We decided to go to Fei Long Fish Soup for lunch today. We wanted something light as this was our fourth makan (eating) stop today 😂
Fei Long was full house as usual today. Lots of buzz and energetic vibes in the packed little shop.
They have various fish like leather jacket, ikan batang fish, pomfret, grouper fish head, and also prawn, lala clams, oysters, etc.
(Fei Long is actually JB's OG Hai Kah Lai equivalent and has been around for over three decades. But, it is a bit further from JB CIQ and less accessed by Singapore day trippers).
Boss uncle Fei Long was not cooking today. He has taken the manager role at the front of the shop.
A friendly, much younger gentleman has taken over uncle Fei Long's cooking station. But, action in the kitchen was frenetic as ever, maybe even more.
I had my usual yee noodle in claypot, while kaki kaki shared a dry noodle with fish soup (with added evaporated milk).
Kaki kaki enjoyed their fish soup and noodles. I looked nice to me too.
My usual as predictable as my usual latte order (in cafes).
The watery soup was almost clear and tasted mainly savoury with some flavour leached from the yee noodles, fried leather jacket fish, and stalks of greens.
Three or four large pieces of deep fried leather jacket fish steaks. Not so thick but the white flesh inside had some tender moist texture and sweet taste while the browned outside was savoury.
I love the soft crunchy texture and savoury taste of blanched yee noodles which are actually deep fried egg noodles.
Breaking and mixing in the raw egg added a subtle bit of egginess to the dish.
If you need a robust umami spicy hot boost to your noodles, Fei Long's sambal will do the trick.
Lots of dishes to explore here, even for regulars.
✍ 5 Apr 2018. We had our breakfast at Restoran Fei Long at Jalan Teratai 4 in Johor Jaya, JB this morning. Love the fish soup here - fresh ingredients, simple preparation, no frills eatery, friendly folks (it's a family run shop), and value for money.
Neat, simply furnished, and clean, Fei Long is popular with locals.
We had this "dry" set of noodles and fish soup (price RM7.50 in 2018).
The noodles were done tender with a slight bounce and served with dark soy sauce and aromatic oil (infused with fried shallot flavour). It's simple and nice, even if the sauce was a little mild and flat.
It's not a big deal as we were here for the fish and soup 😄
The soup was light bodied but packed with well balanced savoury sweet flavours from dried sole fish 鯿魚 and tomato wedges.
There were three large pieces of fried leather jacket fish 雞肉魚 in the bowl. The fresh fish were fried to golden brown outside and to just the right doneness. The fish were fresh and we can taste the natural sweetness in its tender white meat.
Yee noodles 伊麵 with fish and egg in a clay pot (price RM7.50 in 2018). This is my usual order 😋 (prices have gone up slightly).
I like the tender bouncy feel and sweet taste of the yee noodles.
The yee noodles (which are deep fried egg noodles) passed some grease to the fish soup but it still tasted nicely savoury sweet.
Wandering into the kitchen, I saw the boss preparing this.
"What's that?"
"Fish bones. It's not on the menu but we serve it to customers who request for it'
"May I have one please 😊"
It's sea bass bones with bits of meat served in the same dried sole fish soup.
If you like fish bones, this is nice - the sea bass was very fresh, there was quite a bit of meat but there was even more bones. I like it, but obviously bones is not for everyone. Price was RM10.
Fei Long is the boss of Fei Long 😄 He has been serving his popular fish soup for 30 years now.
The dried sole fish that make Fei Long's fish soup tastes sooo.... good!
Fei Long's sambal chili is great. It has robust savoury belacan taste and a sharp chili sting (but it doesn't linger). The sambal chili makes the fish taste better and I even enjoyed it on its own.
4-Stars (out of 5). Fei Long is a good place for a nice fish soup - the soup is tasty, the fish is fresh and well prepared, the place is comfortable, the service is sincere and the price is reasonable.
