Updated: 3 Aug 2022. Following my post on the Kway Teow Kia stall in Multi Mart kopitiam, many readers commented that I should also try the Hainanese congee or porridge in the same coffee shop. Actually, readers have also mentioned this Hainanese congee stall when I posted about the Cantonese porridge at Taman Johor Jaya.
So, with such strong recommendations, we made a trip to check out this much loved Hainanese porridge stall.
The porridge comes in only one style or maybe one and a half style - pork porridge and pork porridge with egg.
Without egg, it is RM4, add 50 sen for an egg (2012 price). With egg now costs RM7 (2022)
Hainanese style porridge is done midway between Teochew porridge where the rice grains remain whole in the watery gruel and Cantonese congee where the rice grains are boiled into a thick paste.

The thick lumpy porridge gruel is nicely, naturally sweet and comes generously loaded with ingredients. It felt literally "homemade" where we don't hold back on ingredients :)) The fresh pork comes in thin slices and also in minced form. MR Lim said some customers like their pork sliced while others like it minced, so they decided to include both. The slices of liver were also nicely done - properly cooked yet tender (liver is rubbery when over cooked as you know).
The finely chopped preserved vegetables (dong chai) add an interesting umami savoury note to the porridge.
I need to make special mention of the home fried shallots. Crunchy and savoury, probably the best fried shallots I have come across so far.
The porridge stall starts at 7:00am till sold out which is usually around 1:00pm.
There is a constant stream of customers, including many who came in with their thermos flasks. This porridge is obviously a hearty, wholesome and yet convenient meal. Lovely comfort food, especially during the rainy season like now.
I liked this porridge very much. Recommended breakfast in Johor Bahru. Thank you to my readers who recommended this good food find.
->> Heart and body warming porridge just like at home. If you are visiting JB, skip the hotel breakfast for this :-p
In the evening, starting around 4:30pm, there is Sun Yau Kee along the same row of shophouses. SYK serves good Cantonese style congee with deep fried pig intestines. Worth a try if you are in the KSL area in the evenings 👈 click

The congee is one of the reason why we go there...
ReplyDeleteThank you. I miss it now.
DeleteStill excellent and rapid service, despite the lady cooking with just one pot of porridge at a time. Price is now RM5 without egg or 5.50 with egg.
