I have long tried to track down a good otak otak Muar shop since I first started Johor Kaki blog. Till now, I haven't found an otak otak Muar that matches the best in Johor Bahru.
I finally found it thanks to bloggie friend Tiffany whose extended family lives in Muar. Tiffany's uncles and aunties run the famous Lau Lee fish ball noodle stalls 老李鱼丸面 in Muar.

Otak Otak Muar at OT Frozen Food Trading in Taman Desa Jaya, Johor Bahru

My foodie buddies Joe and Kumes have been talking about OT Frozen Food Trading for a while and I finally made a visit yesterday. OT Frozen Food Trading makes otak otak at a shop lot in Taman Desa Jaya and supplies many traders and stalls in JB.
OT Frozen Food Trading was started 13 years ago in Taman Desa Jaya in JB by MR Goh who hailed from Muar, the Johor seaside town famous for otak otak. The otak otak at OT Frozen Food are made using the recipe handed down by MR Goh's grandmother.

MR Goh's workers have been with him since OT Frozen Food Trading started. The simply organised work area had a calm and quiet efficiency and purpose.

MR Goh's shop felt more like kampung style communal cooking than a mass production factory. It still relies on traditional recipes and methods, only that MR Goh has organised his workers and work flow to produce the volume required by his customers.

MR Goh makes his otak otak with fresh Ikan Tengiri, Ikan Parang and shrimps everyday.

Fish otak otak in leaf
Besides supplying to traders and stalls, OT Frozen Food also sells its otak otak to walk in customers. The current walk in price list is as follows:
Fish in leaf (cooked) - 60sen per piece
Shrimp in leaf (cooked) - 70sen per piece
Fish head in leaf (cooked) - 90sen per piece
Fish 200 gram slab in box (cooked) - RM5 per box
Shrimp 200 gram slab in box (cooked) - RM5.50 per box.
I brought home an assortment of flavours. We just steamed those that came in slabs and tossed those that came in leaves in the mini toaster oven. I am eating them as I wrote this post.

Fish otak otak
The otak otak made entirely with spiced grounded fish or shrimp meat and coconut milk was tender, sweet and juicy. There was none of that stiffer, lifeless mouth feel that betrays the overuse of starchy bulk fillers. As OT's otak otak do not use artificial colouring it only had a light orangey hue from the curry spices instead of the bright, almost inky red colour we see in other average otak otak.

Shrimp otak otak
OT's otak otak is spicy without being stinging but the spiciness lingers pleasantly like a fragrant, mint in the mouth for a while after the meal.

I love the fish head otak otak as I enjoy picking through the head bones for the interesting tastes and textures of the gelatinous bits :)
It is worthwhile making a trip to OT Frozen Food Trading, if you want to stock up on otak otak at home.

Otak Otak Muar
Muar Otak Otak
Fish, crab, prawn, and lala...what comes to mind?Would you have thought about otak otak? I would if I were in Muar! Famous for their wacky flavours of otak otak, fellow Muar locals really have their own style when it comes to inventing new flavours of otak otak! Never in my life have I tried otak that is made from something other than fish! So, I had to try all the different variations when I visited in Muar!
There's always the aroma of BBQing otak when in Muar, so when someone says to you that there is “love in the air”, he or she probably meant the love for otak J and who can blame them?! Just walk along any street in Muar and you are bound to see someone chomping down otak!
Muar people eat otak otak with everything or just by itself. Otak otak go well with different kinds of food, so they are eaten for breakfast with nasi lemak, for lunch with wanton noodle, for dinner with fried kway teow - just to name a few examples of common combinations, but the possibilities are endless.
After dinner, we went for otak otak at A Class Otak Otak - a contemporary café styled otak otak shop for supper that ended up more like a feeding frenzy.
Enveloped in nipah (attap) leaves, it's like receiving a love letter with each otak! hahaha Muar letters anyone?
The fish otak is made with chunks of ikan tenggiri (mackerel) fish. Fragrant and delicate, it will surely delight your taste buds! Each fish otak costs RM0.50.
The prawn otak is, yup, you guessed it...made with fresh prawns! The juicy prawns add to the sweetness of the otak.
The lala (shellfish) otak was my personal favourite as the lalas in the otak gave it a nice chewy texture yet tender at the same time! Each lala otak costs RM0.50. Get more of this, its uniquely Muar and you won't be disappointed!
Finally, the crab otak is the latest addition to the otak clan. Once you bite into the otak, you will be greeted by flakes of real crab meat! Each stick costs RM1.20. Definitely a must try for crab lovers.

Curry Laksa & Otak Otak @ W. W. Water Works Laksa House 水塘辣沙 along Jalan Kolam Air, Johor Bahru
W. W. Laksa House also known as Water Works Laksa 水塘路辣沙 located along Jalan Kolam Air is an institution in Johor Baru. This favourite has been around since the 1970s.
Storia Café along Jalan Storey, Johor Bahru, Malaysia 士多利茶餐室
Storia Café 士多利茶餐室 an excellent place for breakfast on your way to the day’s business in Johor. The café is just 10 minutes drive away once you clear Malaysian immigration.
After you clear immigration, stay in the lane heading towards Jalan Tebrau. Look to your left. After passing the Shell petrol station, turn left and drive straight ahead for 100 metres to a T-junction. You will see a row of shop houses to your right along Jalan Storey.
Storia Café is at the right hand corner at the end of the row. Storia Café will be brightly lit by and doing a brisk business. Pull over and enjoy a hearty and scrumptious breakfast.
Storia café offers a good spread of nasi lemak, (dry style) mee siam , fried mee, fried rice, fried eggs and fish balls. But it is their star attraction otak otak that pulls in the crowds every morning.
The otak otak are homemade by the owners and are freshly grilled in the café by the baskets full. Made with Ikan Tenggiri (Mackerel fish) wrapped in attap leaves, they come in the fish meat and fish head varieties. The fish head version comes in small quantities and sells the fastest, so only the early birds have a chance to taste it. Anyway, the café will be emptied of everything by about .
There are good reasons for the daily otak otak feeding frenzy. The otak otak is thick, meaty, full bodied, and succulent.
Biting into this taste grenade causes Storia otak otak's light and refreshing flavour of fresh curry spices, coconut milk and fish to burst in your mouth. My taste buds were also treated to delightful encounters with delicious bits of fish unlike the usual variety that lets me taste only flour, curry powder, sugar and salt. After Storia otak otak, I could hardly touch another of those withered and overly spicy, salty, sugary, glowing red artificially coloured variety we normally get.
Each piece of otah otah costs 70 sens (year 2012). I observed that each customer polishes off at least 10 pieces.
Storia café will be my regular pit stop to tank up on otah otah for the day in Johor.
