New Lucky Seafood Restaurant in Johor Bahru Taman Seri Tebrau 新运海鲜酒楼

✍️ 28 Apr 2024. It's the end of our dawn till night JB food trail, and New Lucky was our grand finale. Not because of any particular craving but because most of us haven't been here for a while. New Lucky founded in 1978 is a JB zhi char stalwart that has a loyal following and almost every JB foodie will do the obligatory check in once in a while.

New Lucky located in Taman Seri Tebrau is popular with locals as well as Singaporeans as it is just 10 minutes drive from CIQ.

New Lucky is a casual but comfortable restaurant. The main air conditioned dining room was full house on the Tuesday evening we were there. There are private rooms and an al fresco dining area outside.

The al fresco dining area. Most people chose the air conditioned rooms in today's sweltering heat. But, this area is comfortable enough once night falls.

Some live swimming food outside in well weathered fish tanks.

No menu book. The dishes are shown in overhead signboards. The staff will take your orders by going through the signboards with you.

The signboard list of dishes for your reference. Ordering is easy with number, bilingual names and picture.

Here's what we had for 10 of us, at the end of a long eat and shop day.

Salad 沙律冰菜 RM90++

I tried this "ice vegetable" before elsewhere and liked it. The ice vegetable tastes good by itself. It has a subtle juicy crunch and a clean refreshing taste. New Lucky serves it with a quite heavy thick tangy sweet savoury dressing. A bit of it complements the ice vegetable's natural sweet taste. The salad dressing went well with the fruits though.

Patin fish 巴丁鱼 RM156++

The fish was swimming in its tank before it joined us at the table.

The patin's meat was soft tender, moist but there was a slight earthy taste. The brown sauce was a little flat tasting and there was no aroma from the dish.

Cod Fish 鳕鱼 RM143++

The thin slab (slice 🤔) and thick short strip of Chilean "cod" was partly pan fried and partly steamed. We like this dish as the cod was sweet, done either way. Portion was small for 10 pax, so need to order more next time.

Boneless chicken 金龙鸡 RM90++

I like this dish. The chicken skin was crisp and laid over squid paste or surimi. Nice contrast of slight crispness and soft spongy springiness with layered savouriness. There were no chicken meat or fat in the dish.

Yam pork ribs 芋泥排骨 RM70++

It's orh nee (yam paste) with tender pork ribs. The tender meat fell off the bone easily. I like this dish's layers of savoury and sweet flavours but it got gelak (bloating feeling) pretty quickly 🤭

Beancurd 豆腐 RM40++

Generic tofu smothered with savoury minced pork, fermented beans and soy sauce.

Bee hoon RM40++

The savoury eggy obligatory carbs in lieu of boiled rice. The fried rice vermicelli was not greasy.

Chicken soup 猪肚鸡汤 RM130++

New Lucky's signature pork maw and chicken soup. Comforting old school savoury taste with slight pepperiness. The ingredients had little flavour as it had all been surrendered to the soup.

Based on the dishes we had today, New Lucky is a typical zhi char place suitable for casual group meet ups.

I appreciate the cheerful service staff whom were helpful and earnest. Very friendly, attentive and responsive despite the full house.

New Lucky Seafood Restaurant in Johor Bahru Taman Seri Tebrau 新运海鲜酒楼

✍ 7 Apr 2019. New Lucky is a half century old stalwart of JB seafood / zhi char restaurants which is very popular with locals and Singaporeans alike. Two of us, we went to try their famous char kway teow and peppery pig stomach soup which enjoy many raving reviews.

Inside the restaurant, decor and furnishings were simple but it was air conditioned and comfortable. It was full house this Saturday evening, so we sat al fresco outside.

No air condition but the courtyard outside was cool in the evening and we liked the ambiance. Traffic outside was congested but we were shielded from noise and fumes by low shrubs ringing the courtyard.

There was no menu card - the dishes were displayed overhead but no prices shown.

Live seafood which we will come back for next time when we have more eating troops.

Avoid the tables nearest to the fish tanks as the water splashes can reach these tables when the fish trash in the net when the staff scoops them out of the tanks.

We had a serving of New Lucky's famous fried kway teow 溪蛤妙粿条. It's quite a good size serving for RM12++.

The kway teow noodles were well fried with a nice caramelised char outside. Neither too wet nor too dry. Good wok hei 鑊氣. I can taste the layers of savouriness from the caramelised soya sauce. There was underlying subtle sweetness and the taste of lard. However, aroma was weak.

The fried kway teow was spiked with pork lard cracklings and they were generous with blood cockles. I asked for the blood cockles to be cooked through because at my age I dare not eat raw or half cooked cockles anymore (though I would love to 😂 ). New Lucky's char kway teow is likeable and reasonably priced.

New Lucky's signature peppery pig stomach soup 豬肚湯 (known as Superior Soup in the menu). Price RM70++.

The cloudy tea colour soup was loaded with lots of ingredients like pig stomach, chicken, mushroom, tiny dried scallop, dried cuttlefish, bits of ham etc.

The peppery taste was assertive and dominant but the heat was not sharp. Combined with underlying savoury flavours from the other ingredients, the peppery soup tasted murky or "chok" 浊. We didn't really enjoy it.

The tender spongy pig stomach tasted flat savoury with its natural flavours either all leached into the peppery soup or there was none to start with (as the pig stomach was frozen? We are not sure).

The stir fried green dragon vegetable 青龍菜 (price RM15++) had a wet savoury layer which effectively masked the subtle green taste of the crunchy chewy vegetable.

Information for you 👉 We enjoyed the char kway teow but felt that the Superior Soup was just average. If we come back to try other dishes, we won't order the pig stomach soup again.

What dishes should we order for our next visit to New Lucky Seafood?
