Xiao Wang Zi 小王子 Nasi Lemak • Mee Siam📍Restoran New Fook Lim Taman Daya 福林茶室

This dry mee Siam is another of kaki kaki AW's favourites.

Actually, 小王子 Nasi Lemak stall's signature dish is their nasi lemak, that's why they are named that way 😁 And, I always prefer soupy mee Siam over dry mee Siam.

But anyway, kaki kaki recommend, so I go try with an open mind lo 🫢

Mee rebus is one of my favourite hawker dishes - they're everywhere in Singapore, Malaysia and Indonesia, just the right size for a snack or light meal, and delicious. Thing is, good mee rebus are harder to come by these days. I am so happy to stumble upon Auntie Lily's tasty mee rebus. You must try it too when you are near Taman Daya in Johor Bahru.

When local born and raised Hakka boy, KK declared that Wei Wei in Taman Daya has dethroned his long time favourite lei cha shop in JB, it's time to stop mugging around. I quickly invited KK to meet for lunch at Wei Wei as authentic Hakka lei cha and yong tou foo are among my favourite dishes.

Now you can have Tuaran Mee in Johor JB 斗亚兰面@林家美食館

Tuaran-Mee-Johor-JB-斗亚兰面@林家美食館

Over in East Malaysia, Sarawak is famous for their kolo mee while Sabah is well known for their Tuaran mee 斗亚兰面. But, while kolo mee stalls are rather common in Johor, there is none serving Tuaran mee - well, until now.

Char kway teow @ Restoran Lee Heng 利兴美食中心 | Junction of Jalan Sagu 1 and Sagu 4, Taman Daya, Johor Bahru ⏰ 8am to 1pm (Monday off)
In Malaysia and Singapore, char kway teow is everywhere at almost every coffee shop or hawker centre but good ones are few and far in between. The fried kway teow stall in Lee Heng kopitiam in Taman Daya is one of the better ones, and hence, has a strong following in Johor Bahru.

Chef's Choice - No Name Stall at Restoran Yi Fon Kopitiam in Taman Daya Johor Bahru

Yi-Fon-Taman-Daya-Johor-Bahru

Malaysia has lots of such nondescript little "no name" stalls. These mon and pop type stalls don't do any branding. They don't even have the very basics of branding, like even a stall name. The stall signboard only says what they serve here. So, their marketing depends entirely on word of month which doesn't travel very far or very quickly. Fortunately, now everyone can help spread the word with social media.

Laksa Johor & More @ Dann's Café in Taman Daya, Johor Bahru, Malaysia Update 2019

Laksa Johor & More at Dann's Café in Taman Daya, Johor Bahru, Malaysia Update 2019

Way back in 2012, Encik Kamalluddin the founder of Dann's cafe said I should come back for his nasi briyani (I was at Dann's to taste their Laksa Johor which is one of the best in the country). I finally kept the date, seven years on 😂

Claypot Catfish at Restoran Top Chance 聚品鲜 in Taman Daya, Johor Bahru, Malaysia

I was food spotting around Taman Daya at about 2:00pm when a full house at Top Chance 聚品鲜 restaurant caught my attention. Top Chance looked like any other run of the mill family run seafood and zhe char restaurant ubiquitous in Johor and Malaysia.

Cendol and Coconut Juice Stall in Taman Daya, Johor Bahru, Malaysia

Most residents of Taman Daya would know about these mobile cendol and fresh coconut juice stalls at the junction of Jalan Sagu 9 and Sagu 10. Suppiah had been running the stalls for 19 years at this street corner and his son Mani joined him.

The two stalls open at 9:00am and close at 7:00pm everyday. I was there on a Friday afternoon and there was a constant stream of customers of all races and ages. Most were regulars as they chatted with Suppiah and Mani like old friends.

Some ate the cendol and drank their fresh coconut on plastic stools along the five foot way. Many took away to enjoy the cendol and coconut juice at home.

Suppiah now runs the coconut juice stall.

Suppiah is very swift with that chopper. Three or four quick slashes, and the coconut is ready to serve!

This refreshing fresh young coconut for RM3.

Gentle scraping with the spoon shaved the tender coconut flesh off the inside of the green coconut. Delicious natural flavours, nothing more, nothing less, nothing added. Perfect.

A Chinese regular customer drove by and passed Suppiah a baby milk bottle which the latter promptly filled up with fresh coconut juice. When the customer was paying Suppiah, the latter responded "Free for your baby." It was such a everyday, matter of fact, pure and simple heartwarming gesture.

I asked the customer curiously "Can babies drink this?" as I thought that coconut juice is "too cooling". The gentleman replied that all his three children drank coconut juice since they were a year old. Coconut juice is good for digestion and strengthens the immune system, he added, before quickly getting back into his car with his children inside.

Mani runs the cendol stall. Mani hand shaves the ice block with a traditional ice shaving machine, something very few cendol stalls do nowadays.

Mani ladles in a cupful of syrupy gula Melaka.

Then a scoopful of coconut milk and pandan jelly "worms".

The green pandan jelly "worms" that cendol lovers love.

The take away version has a mix of shaved ice and ice cubes to keep the cup of cendol cold for a longer time. The usual "dine in" version served in a small bowl was similar to those in other cendol stalls.

Ice cold cendol and fresh coconut juice, the perfect combination to chase away the tropical afternoon heat.

CLOSED Claypot Catfish @ Restoran Shui Sean 水仙 in Taman Daya

Claypot Catfish @ Restoran Shui Sean 水仙 in Taman Daya
The cutest restaurant logo that I have seen for a long while
Claypot Catfish @ Restoran Shui Sean 水仙 in Taman Daya

The signature dish here at Shui Sean 水仙 in Taman Daya, so eloquently stated by their logo, is their claypot catfish.

This claypot catfish for 3 persons costs RM18

When the pot of catfish arrived at the table, the sauce was still was bubbly hot and blowing steam. The fresh catfish is cut into large chunks and steaks and braised in a claypot with a spicy savoury sauce.

The flavour of the gooey caramelised sauce is a complex mix of sour, sweet, salty, spicy, hot and savoury. The braising sauce is made with red hot chili peppers, stalks of lemon grass, slices of ginger, onions, fermented black beans and many other spices and herbs.  There is also a subtle trace of cooking wine, which I like.

The large chunks and steaks of fresh catfish have bone and skin on. The thick pieces of catfish are moist, juicy and tender. The catfish’s light tasting white meat absorbed the flavours of the spicy braising sauce very well.

The thin smooth scaleless skin of the young catfish was gelatinous and soft, adding texture to the dish. (For those worried about the perceived muddy taste of catfish, there was not even the slightest hint of it here.)

The robust spicy braising sauce whets one’s appetite and it complements the lighter flavours of pearly white rice, soft tofu and fresh choy sum (green vegetable) perfectly. I realised afterwards that I unconsciously ate more than my usual amount of rice ☻

The friendly lady owner does the cooking personally to ensure the highest quality dishes are delivered to the customer. Once again, the pride and hospitality of the eatery owners in Johor made me feel more like a guest than a customer.
