When I want a balanced meal, quick, no fuss and doesn't compromise on choice and taste, I often go for chap chai png which is known as economy rice (in Singapore) and chap fan (in KL). When in JB, my favourite place for economy rice is 肆源小炒 near the Masai bus terminal. It doesn't have an English name, I just refer to it as Mr Tay's (the boss) place.

Chinese Red Stewed / Braised Pork Belly Recipe. Hong Shou Rou 紅燒肉

Stewed pork belly 🐖 also known as red braised pork belly or hong shou rou 紅燒肉 is a popular Chinese pork dish - it is also one of my favourites. Hong shou rou is enjoyed all over China and in Chinese communities around the world. It is considered a "hundred family dish" 百家菜 meaning, a dish which every Chinese family has a recipe for - so there are many variations of hong shou rou. It is basically a savoury sweet dish with tenderly soft skin, meat and almost melt in the mouth fat. The versatile dish is eaten with rice, noodles or bun.

What Does Moray Eels Taste Like?

I was still in KL when Uncle Bob invited us to join him to taste Moray Eel at Johnny's restaurant 小珍 SZ Kitchen @ Fairprice Hub, Joo Koon MRT Singapore. Thanks to Johnny and Uncle Bob, I had a chance to taste it when I returned to Singapore today.

Update Jun 2025: SZ Kitchen now has two outlets. Here at Fairprice Hub at Joo Koon MRT, SZ Kitchen focusses on affordable set meals. Premium fish (giant grouper, moray eel, hump head parrotfish, etc) are now served at SZ Kitchen's flagship restaurant at D'Arena. It also has a full range elevated Chinese seafood restaurant menu.

Wong Mei Kee 王美记燒肉 have long been on my Eat List as many buddies swear by it - many declaring it the best roast pork in Malaysia and Singapore. I finally got to taste Wong Kee's legendary siu yok or sio bak - missing it many times before because the roast meat was always sold out within 1, at most 2 hours.

✍️4 Apr 2025. Lau Tee's Teochew noodle has a special place in the hearts of old Johor Bahru folks. Since Lau Tee's passing (a long time ago), his nephew Ah Seng's stall Sang Heng had been carrying the flag of Lau Tee's legacy. Uncle Ah Seng passed on in 2016.

Yue Mei, one of Uncle Ah Seng's long time helpers has since opened her own stall 玉梅潮州面薄 serving Lau Tee's style of Teochew noodles.
