劉三姐 is a well loved fried carrot cake boss in the relatively quiet Bakawali section of Taman Johor Jaya. 劉三姐 has been here for over three decades.

This is one of my occasional breakfast places in JB.

It's not going to blow many minds but hey this is simple, comfort staple food, a blessing we can enjoy and appreciate everyday. Nevertheless, this is the favourite roti canai stall of many people in Johor and is one of mine too.

When I first started Johor Kaki blog in 2012, I went a little crazy over kway teow kia (JB's answer to Singapore's kway chap). I went around all over the whole of Johor Bahru looking for the best KTK stalls / restaurants. Then, due to the Covid pandemic when the SG-MY borders were shut, I didn't have kway teow kia for over two years.

Oriental Kopi Johor Jaya branch has been my regular Nanyang coffee and teh (tea) haunt in Johor since the borders reopened post Covid pandemic. The coffee, tea & food are good, service attentive, environment is clean, spacious, cool, filled with nice hyperlocal atmospherics, and prices are very reasonable.

This is the best roti canai / prata in Johor Jaya Ros Merah and one of the best in JB. Boss Fahrul has been flipping roti for over 20 years - he flips the dough big and wide like a large scarf so we get prata that is crisp on the outside and the many folds inside are moist and gently chewy. Enjoy it with nice mild curry that is spiced up with sambal chili with lots of anchovy taste.

We had a simple but enjoyable dinner at Ming Ji 铭记家乡小炒 at the Rosmerah section of Taman Johor Jaya.

Sunflower Cafe in Johor Jaya in JB. A Modern Malaysian Kopitiam

If there is a "Malaysian cafe", to me it's those contemporary kopitiam (coffee shop) of sorts that serve Nanyang coffee with an extensive multicultural menu from kaya butter toasts to nasi lemak, mee siam, roti canai, laksa, Hainanese chicken rice, char kway teow to spaghetti, chicken chops as well as burgers and more. Familiar brands are Old Town White Coffee, Secret Recipe, and Papparich etc. Johor Bahru homegrown brands include Moonlight, Tea Garden, One Two Eat, The Toast etc. There are also many up and coming Johor brands. Today, makan buddy Keng Chong introduced me to Sunflower Bakery & Restaurant in Johor Jaya. We love it.

Seetoh wanted to try the crispy prawn cracker fritter stall I shared in my blog but the coffee shop was closed when we got there (in Johor Jaya). So, I quickly dialled up my memory, and remembered that JB foodie buddy Keng Chong shared about a home based stall at #1, Jalan Keembong 38 (which is just around the corner in Taman Johor Jaya). Seeing that there is always a long queue for Hong Kong roasts at 洪记烧腊鸡饭 during lunch, we came early to Restoran Oktober coffee shop in Johor Jaya (Bakawali side) to try it out.

When I need a detox meal but am unwilling to sacrifice flavour and don't want to feel hungry in Johor Bahru, 擂茶 lei cha always comes to the rescue. Lei cha shops and stalls are everywhere in JB and I can truthfully say that I have not had a really bad one before (the traditional Hakka staple is served with pride). Restoran Hakka Tu Lou 土楼客家菜馆 in Johor Jaya is one of the popular lei cha shops in JB.

Restoran Hai Ji. Hunt for Johor Best Song Fish Head (Episode 1) 海记松鱼头

My current best of Johor food hunt project is to look for the best steamed song fish head in the state. Restoran Hai Ji was the second song fish head I tried in JB and the first that I liked. (I have been a fan of steamed song fish head since I tasted the legendary Chan Sow Lin steamed song fish head of Kuala Lumpur over 20 years ago.)

After an unsuccessful food hunt this morning, I fell back on an old favourite 唐記雞絲河粉 Tang Kee Chicken Hor Fun stall in Old Eight in One Restaurant coffee shop at Johor Jaya Rosmerah. I fell in love again with Tang Kee's rendition of the Ipoh classic. The more I tried food beyond JB, the more confident I am about the quality of food here - it's just that we need to seek them out one by one.
