Came to Taman Pelangi's pasar pagi or morning market which is held on Monday mornings. Opted for my usual kopi C kosong and wanton mee at Soon Lee coffee shop as the hyperlocal vibes of the market seemed to flow into the kopitiam.

Even though Johor Bahru is originally a Teochew enclave, hence its nickname Little Swatow, there are actually more wanton mee stalls than Teochew kway teow mee / thng stalls (based on my observation). And, Johoreans are spoilt for choice as Johor wanton mee standards are high with many stalls / restaurants still making their own noodles.

Wanton noodles, of course, is a quintessentially Cantonese dish.

Wandering around Taman Mount Austin during the "dead zone" between 2pm to 5pm when most restaurants take their afternoon breaks in JB, I stumbled upon JD Wan Tan Mee. I am always curious about successful one dish restaurants as it takes a lot of self confidence to put all of one's eggs in one basket. Anyway, JD Wan Tan Mee opens from 12 noon to 12 midnight, so it was my lifesaver today when I was famished at 4pm.

For quite some time already, while running errands in Taman Molek, I would pass by Wo Jia 我家 wanton mee. Every time, I was attracted by the comforting smell of dried anchovies churning in the large pot of steamy soup. I always made a mental note to come back after my errands but never did; always rushing off to get the next thing done. This morning, I finally tried Wo Jia wanton mee, and enjoyed it.

Muar Glutton Street is a short 100 metre long strip of food stalls along Jalan Haji Abu. I like the Ah Choy Wan Tan Mee 亚才云吞面 here - I think it is one of the best in Johor and Singapore. (Disclaimer: This is a "red" wanton mee. Hardcore "black" WTM people can skip to the next post 😝 )

✍ 31 Aug 2018. Folks who come to JB's "Culture Street" regularly would have noticed Xuu Yau wanton mee shop just beside the famous "Red House" which had been whitewashed (alamak... ). I checked out the new wanton mee shop this morning, and would rank it among the best in Johor Bahru because of their springy QQ noodles.

So, after durians right... we adjourned to the old Sri Tebrau Market & Hawker Centre 大马小贩中心 for one of my favourite wanton noodles at Yap Wan Tan Mee at stall #65. Oh.. man... I have not eaten Yap's wanton mee for 4 years and I must say this is the most improved wanton mee in JB. Yap Wan Tan Mee has gone from very good to one of the very best.

Restoran HW Wanton Mee used to open 9 to 5 - I mean 9pm to 5am 😄 It's a favourite haunt of JB's night owls.
