Six Day Sichuan Tour - Exploring the Land of Mystery, Majesty & Gastronomy
I just got back from a wonderful 6 day trip to China's southwestern Sichuan province (about the same land size as Spain). This is a summary of highlights of our trip where we were mesmerised by amazing natural scenery, awed by the cradle of Chinese civilisation and savoured the flavours of a UNESCO world culinary capital. All destinations were within 180 km or 2 hours from Chengdu city centre and connected by excellent highways and high speed rail. I will follow up with detailed posts on the individual destinations.

Chinatown Noodle Man Lan Zhou La Mian. Great Zhajiangmian & Singapore Hokkien Mee
Truth be told, I am not really a fan of la mian even though I am fascinated by how the noodle master hand pulls a lump of flour dough into long strands of slender noodles. I've eaten la mian in Singapore, Malaysia, North America and many times in China but never liked the limp mouth feel of the thick noodles. Today, Singapore Chinatown's Noodle Man changed my mind about Lan Zhou La Mian.

Lei Cha @ Tu Lou Hakka Restaurant in Johor Jaya 土楼客家菜馆
When I need a detox meal but am unwilling to sacrifice flavour and don't want to feel hungry in Johor Bahru, 擂茶 lei cha always comes to the rescue. Lei cha shops and stalls are everywhere in JB and I can truthfully say that I have not had a really bad one before (the traditional Hakka staple is served with pride). Restoran Hakka Tu Lou 土楼客家菜馆 in Johor Jaya is one of the popular lei cha shops in JB.

Johor Foodie Facebook Groups to Follow 新山人的美食, 吃的平台 & 柔佛新山美食
My favourite way of searching for the best eats of Johor (and Singapore) is to pound the streets and try out the food stalls one at a time. Johor Kaki readers and friends also give me tip offs on where are the best food. For Johor food, I also check out the recommendations shared in Johor foodie Facebook groups 新山人的美食, 吃的平台 and 柔佛新山美食.
MS Beryani near Plaza Angsana. Best Johor Nasi Briyani List
Went to MS Beryani for lunch today after seeing Kevin Leong shared it on 吃的平台 JB foodie group (this is one of the groups I follow for leads on the best food in JB). MS Beryani's style of briyani is similar to Mohd Shan of Batu Pahat and Roslin Beriani House in Kebun Teh, JB which are all among the best nasi briyani of Johor.
Sun Marpoh Popular Cantonese Family Restaurant in Ipoh 孖宝海鲜饭店
It was the last day of our 3 day Ipoh foodie trip and I suggested that we could try an old school family type restaurant after eating so much street food and kopitiam food. Our Ipoh buddy Gilbert dialled a few of his favourites but it was full house everywhere. He finally found an available table at Sun Marpoh 孖宝海鲜饭店 which we quickly grabbed without much ado.

Pineapple Tart Recipe 🍍 A Southeast Asian Chinese New Year Tradition 黄梨塔
Pineapple tart is a popular festive snack in Singapore, Malaysia and Indonesia. Most Chinese homes have pineapple tarts during Chinese New Year as it is considered auspicious - pineapple 🍍 黄梨 in Hokkien "ong lai" sounds the same as "prosperity come" 旺来. I think its gold colour has a lot to do with it too. Their addictive delicious taste is icing on the
