Found myself in Ipoh again, the Cantonese town of Perak, Malaysia. As a Cantonese myself, I feel a certain visceral affinity for the laid back, prosperous former mining town.

Eating dim sum is part of being Cantonese, so it is naturally part of our agenda.

✍️ 9 Oct 2025. Finally visited Kellie's Castle 😄

I first heard about Kellie's Castle when it made the news in 2000, when the Malaysian government decided to restore and repurpose the long abandoned property into a tourist attraction.

Ipoh_Kedai_Kopi_Yee_Fatt_怡发茶室

I requested buddy Gary who was born and now retired in Ipoh to show me some places off the tourist belt which he and Ipoh people love. Gary suggested a few names and we quickly settled on Yee Fatt as he mentioned a tea known as 蛋茶 or literally egg tea which I have never tried before. Christine chimed in which made me even more excited as I couldn't make out her description except that it is something very special 😬

Ipoh People's Favourite Dai Shu Geok Yong Tau Foo (Big Tree Foot) 大树脚 (忠记兵如港口大树头炸料粉)

Every time I go to Ipoh (though I don't go there that often), the local hosts will proudly take us to Dai Shu Geok Yong Tau Foo (忠记兵如港口大树脚炸料粉). Dai Shu Geok in Cantonese means "at the foot of the big tree".

Sun Marpoh Popular Cantonese Family Restaurant in Ipoh 孖宝海鲜饭店

Sun Marpoh Popular Cantonese Family Restaurant in Ipoh 孖宝海鲜饭店

It was the last day of our 3 day Ipoh foodie trip and I suggested that we could try an old school family type restaurant after eating so much street food and kopitiam food. Our Ipoh buddy Gilbert dialled a few of his favourites but it was full house everywhere. He finally found an available table at Sun Marpoh 孖宝海鲜饭店 which we quickly grabbed without much ado.

Every Ipoh Tourist goes to Chang Jiang White Coffee 長江白咖啡 @ Jalan Windsor

Every Ipoh Tourist goes to Chang Jiang White Coffee @ Jalan Windsor

Every time I come to Ipoh, my local buddies will bring me to Chang Jiang White Coffee 長江白咖啡 at Jalan Windsor without fail. I had procrastinated writing about it because Chang Jiang really doesn't need any more introduction - too famous liao lah. Ask any Ipohite for Ipoh White Coffee recommendation and Chang Jiang is bound to be mentioned (along with Nam Heong and Sin Yun Loong in the same breath).

Woong Kee Tau Fu Fa • One of the Best Ipoh Bean Curd 旺记祖傳豆腐花

Woong Kee Tau Fu Fa. One of the Best Ipoh Bean Curd 旺记祖傳豆腐花

The humble bean curd is found everywhere in Malaysia and Singapore, but only in Ipoh do people say it is a Must Eat for visitors. No where in Malaysia and Singapore can you find bean curd as smooth and as aromatic as those in Ipoh. (I am not sure how Ipoh bean curd compares with the best in Guangzhou China.)

Breakfast @ Kedai Kopi Keng Nam 瓊南茶餐室. The Quintessential Ipoh Coffee Shop

Thanks Gilbert and Cassandra for taking us to 瓊南茶餐室 Kedai Kopi Keng Nam (coffee shop) to experience an authentic Ipoh breakfast. If you have time for just breakfast in Ipoh, I would suggest Keng Nam coffee shop because of the variety and tastiness of the food here, not to mention the good Ipoh coffee.

Ah Hou Roast Meat. One of the Best Ipoh Roast Meat Stalls 阿豪烧肉档

If you have been following Johor Kaki for a while, you may notice that I rarely post about siew yok or sio bak (Cantonese roast meat). It's because most of the sio bak I tried tend to be too salty for my liking. Ah Hou's roast meat 阿豪烧肉档 in Ipoh, however, was just nice for me - I love it.
