Tin & Tin (Cathay) Beef Kway Teow (Shang Ji) @ Jalan Lumba Kuda, Johor Bahru

This humble little stall in a corner in Shangi Ji coffee shop along Jalan Lumba Kuda offers a good beef kway teow.

Tin & Tin (Cathay) Beef Kway Teow stall opened for just a year (as at 2011) but the stall owner Tan Ah Teng had been in the restaurant business for over 40 years. (This space was previously occupied by the legendary Ah Deng Beef Noodle stall. Ah Deng retired in 2010.)

When Tin & Tin's beef kway teow was served, it looked ordinary enough.

My impression changed the moment I tasted my first mouthful of Tin & Tin's kway teow. My surprised senses suddenly all awake. My mood brightened up to the joy of stumbling upon another gastronomic discovery. Tin & Tin beef kway teow is classes above many others I had eaten before.

Tin & Tin's magic is in the sauce.

The sauce’s beefy flavour is light and delicate, and there is little hint of gooey starch, salt or MSG. When this sauce coats the plain kway teow which is tender but still firm – the result is a beef kway teow that pleasures the taste buds.

The sprinkling of fried peanuts, blanched minced beef, shredded kiam chye (salted mustard), bits of fried shallots and chopped fresh spring unions add further interesting flavours to the tasty kway teow.

That’s not all. There’s still the beef and beef tendon soup that comes with the kway teow. The beef is so tender that “melts in your mouth” is only a slight exaggeration in describing the delightful experience.

The beef and tendons are fresh and its flavour is delicate and delicious.

I am definitely coming back and bringing friends to enjoy this gem of a find 😄

    1. Yes, this is a different stall from Ah Deng who retired two years ago. Many people miss Ah Deng's beef kway teow.

  4. apparently there is one new beef noodle stall operating right at the shop where Ah Deng used to operate.. me and my parents prefer this new stall as the taste and presentation is much similar to Ah Deng's.. hope Johor Kaki can go try it.. we miss the previous stall's beef noodle stall very much! 1. Yes, I heard a lot about the old Ah Deng too. Obviously he is much loved and his beef noodles is greatly missed. OK, I shall try the new stall that you suggested. Thanks for recommending.
