Came to Marmolada food centre 大家胜美食中心 near KSL mall to try the chicken rice and roast stall after seeing Victor's FB post. Alexis also mentioned this stall to me.

We were food spotting around Taman Desa Jaya (near Jusco Tebrau) when we were stopped in our tracks by this huge eye catching slab of golden siew yok (roast pork belly or sio bak) at Local Best coffee shop 本地好美食天地.

位于新山 Desa Jaya, Jalan Danau 1 的"本地好烧腊"烧肉脆皮, 肉嫩, 油香. 叉烧也好吃. 值得一试.

Went food spotting in the old Masai area today. When we asked passers by where do locals like to eat in Masai, we were pointed to Hwa Sun Roast Duck Rice at Jalan Jagung (a backstreet behind Masai's main street, Jalan Masai Lama).

Johor Bahru recently has a new Hong Kong roast meat shop called Tong Tong Cross Way Bay 糖糖尖沙咀港式烧臘.

The chef owner Martin invited me to visit his newly opened shop in Taman Sri Tebrau and to try his popular roast meats.

Martin used to run his small roast meat stall in a Singapore coffee shop. Martin made his name there with his ultra crispy skin siew yok 烧肉 (roast belly pork), even earning praises from KF Seetoh, Singapore's famous food guru.

Martin recently moved to Johor Bahru.

Speaking with Martin, I gathered that the keys to Tong Tong Cross Way Bay's signature roasts are in the techniques which Martin personally developed and also the quality of the ingredients.

The marinated ducks are blown dry before roasting. Tong Tong Cross Way Bay uses only chilled ducks of at least 3 kg size for their roast ducks.

Martin said that chilled large ducks are the meatiest, juiciest and more flavourful.

Local chilled pork is used for Cross Way Bay's siew yoke and char siew 叉烧.

Inside Tong Tong Cross Way Bay roast meat shop, the decor is still bare bones at the moment. Martin intends to renovate his shop in stages. His priority now is to make his roast meats known in the local market.

Already, Martin's ultra crispy siew yoke and other roast meats are winning him a growing regular clientele in JB.

Our tasting plate of char siew and siew yok.

The signature of Tong Tong Cross Way Bay's siew yok 烧肉
is their golden ultra crispy skin.

At it's best, the thick savoury skin is crispy like an airy brittle rice cracker with just the right (slight) greasiness. In the mouth, the crispy skin crumbles and tastes like a light buttery cookie.

The attached fat and lean meat are moist and tender.

For the char siew, I liked the thin translucent pieces with juicy tender fat and meat.

The golden brown crispy skin popped off the thick chunk of tender moist chicken meat.

Besides roast meats, Tong Tong Cross Way Bay also serves braised pork trotters but we just had no more stomach space to try it.

The roast ducks were also sold out today, so we didn't get to taste that either.

Shall be back for these :D

The best time to be at Tong Tong Cross Way Bay is when the shop opens at 10:00am and the roast meats are hot, just out of the roaster.

Tong Tong Cross Way Bay's ultra crispy skin siew yok 烧肉 is a Must Try.

Breakfast in Yong Peng at One Plus One Restaurant 1 加 1, Johor

I am building up a portfolio of Yong Peng eateries as I realised that Yong Peng is a very convenient rest stop for drivers between JB/Singapore and Malacca/KL. As Yong Peng has many Foochow people, it is also a good place to try Foochow specialities not easily found elsewhere in Malaysia or Singapore.

Yong Peng is at Exit 241 for southbound and Exit 242 for northbound traffic. Yong Peng town is just 10 minutes drive or 2 km in, once you exit the toll gates. Yong Peng is just a small "strip town" with one main road (Jalan Besar), so major eateries are easy to locate - a plus point for travellers passing through.

So on our trip to KL, we exited the North-South Highway (northbound) at Exit 242. Our original plan was to have breakfast at Yuan Yean but we arrived too early - the famous Foochow fish ball place was not opened for the day yet. So we drove around the little town looking for Plan B.

Turned the corner and we stumbled upon the market square just behind Jalan Besar (the main street).

I spotted this unremarkable charcoal roast meat stall. But, as a roast meat person, I have to investigate every roast meat stall that I come across. Suspicious looking or not.

I saw a few locals who looked like regulars buying their roast meat as part of their daily marketing. Trusted by locals - a good sign :D

Looking at that slab of roast belly pork, I found it's clean, taut lines attractive. I decided to try this.

It turned out that this roast meat stall is part of One Plus One kopitiam. The boss, Mr. Tan runs the roast meat stall while the lady boss and children run the dim sum section.

We tried several things at One Plus One 1 加 1. This is the combination that I will come back for when passing Yong Peng again.

I will have century egg porridge, fried mee and eat it along with roast belly pork and a glass of kopi kaw

Breakfast-Yong-Peng-One-Plus-One-1 加 1-Johor

I like something with more fluid in the morning, so porridge is one of my preferred breakfasts. One Plus One's porridge is soft, savoury from the century egg and minced pork. For small eaters, this porridge is actually quite substantial in itself.

Breakfast-Yong-Peng-One-Plus-One-1 加 1-Johor

This simple fried mee is actually One Plus One's hottest seller. The slurpy yellow noodles were savoury, slick and had nice bite and mouth feel i.e. not too soft nor stiff.

Breakfast-Yong-Peng-One-Plus-One-1 加 1-Johor

The siew yok was nicely done. The skin was crackly crispy though it wasn't thick or airy like rice puffs. The meat and fat had just the right savoury taste, not too salty. It also had good bite and very slight bouncy mouth feel.

The porridge, fried mee and siew yok combination makes a great breakfast for me :D

The kopi was average kopitiam fare.

After our breakfast, we stayed a while to chat with the owners.

Breakfast-Yong-Peng-One-Plus-One-1 加 1-Johor

The boss' son churns out nearly 40 wok loads of this steaming fried mee everyday. One of the keys of One Plus One's fried mee is the savoury sauce made with ground anchovies and hae bee (dried shrimps). The rest is the skill of the boss' son in handling the wok and fire.

Breakfast-Yong-Peng-One-Plus-One-1 加 1-Johor

Mr. Tan, the boss has been making Hong Kong roasts for 40+ years. Now, another of Mr. Tan's sons does the heavy lifting and roasting work.

Breakfast-Yong-Peng-One-Plus-One-1 加 1-Johor

Nowadays, Mr. Tan's main task is to cut the meat for customers. His skill with the chopper is a joy to watch.

Not mind blowing "Die Die Must Try" delicious but if you pulled into Yong Peng early and need to top up on carbs and caffeine for the drive, Restoran One Plus One has what you need in a tasty package.

You may want to check out One Plus One's tim sum too.

hmm... next time I am here, I shall ask the boss why he called his restaurant One Plus One. Forgot to ask this time.

Siew Yoke (Roast Pork Belly) @ You Kee XO Restaurant in Taman Ungku Tun Aminah

Roast pork that my heart doctor wish I never knew about

It is almost taken for granted that when one goes to You Kee XO Restaurant, one would always order their famous XO roast duck. The popularity of its XO roast duck has somehow over-shadowed their other excellent dishes served.

You Kee's 3 treasures - siew yoke, XO roast duck and char siew

Why do I say so? If you have tasted You Kee’s siew yoke, you would agree with me totally! This is no ordinary siew yoke, where it comes with the skin, a layer of fat and a third layer of lean meat.

This siew yoke has 2 layers of fat and 2 layers of lean meat, all neatly layered underneath a thin crisp covering of pork skin.

Do not under estimate the crispy-ness of such a small piece of pork skin - it provides just the right amount of crunchy-ness for the other 4 layers of fat and lean meat of which it is attached to!

Each layer of fat is translucent - which in my opinion is the guarantee of juicy-ness and flavour.

Each layer of lean meat is tender yet firm and not too salty.

Altogether this multilayer treat led me to throw cholesterol consciousness to the wind. I ate every piece with a blissful smile! Pray my doctor doesn’t read this – she will be mighty upset with me but I will not be surprised if she goes to try the siew yoke herself☻
