Old Place Bak Kut Teh 舊古來肉骨茶 in Johor Bahru, Mount Austin
Came twice with my Kulai friend Mandy to Old Place Bak Kut Teh 舊古來肉骨茶 in Mount Austin for their old Kulai style bak kut teh.
Kulai is famous for Sze Hwa bak kut teh, and also another style which is more herbal, found at homes.
Old Place Bak Kut Teh 舊古來肉骨茶 serves the homely type of herbal bak kut teh.
The owner, Ms Kee is like a mum making soup for her family.
Things are small scale here at Old Place Bak Kut Teh 舊古來肉骨茶, just like at home.
The simple shop was very well kept and very clean.
There was a steady stream of customers but none of the rush and crush of the more commercial bak kut teh shops.
The warm homely feeling start from the menu card.
I like the look and feel of this simple menu card. Everything on just one sheet of laminated paper. Nice :D
I like this Hakka style deep fried pork 客家炸肉 a lot.
It's one of the best Hakka deep fried pork that I have come across in Johor Bahru.
The belly pork marinated with fermented bean curd (nam yee 南乳) was fried till crispy outside and still slightly tender inside. Fried at high temperature, the pieces of fried belly pork were not greasy at all.
Must order.
The bak kut teh here is the mildly herbal kind.
The tea coloured, mildly herbal broth was almost grease free. It had a homely flavour, the kind commonly found in Kulai homes.
It was neither deeply savoury nor peppery, the flavours which Singaporeans are more used to.
The meat was tender and I could pull it off the bone easily (but it was not the fall off the bone type of tender).
I like it that the slightly sweet meat still had some bite and was not mushy soft.
We also tried the pig tail soup, which is one of my favourite dishes.
Like the pork ribs, there was some bite in the meat and the skin was slightly chewy and springy.
I like.
The usual bak kut teh side dishes were also available.
Nicely done deep fried bean curd skin in braising sauce.
Optional yam rice for those who prefer it to plain white rice.
I like to eat my bak kut teh with chopped fresh garlic.
If you like mildly herbal bak kut teh, you may wish to try Old Place Bak Kut Teh 舊古來肉骨茶.
