We had lunch today at Big Brother 2 二师兄 at Taman Seri Austin in Johor Bahru.
Big Brother 2 is a simple shop lot restaurant serving Western type dishes at budget friendly prices. For lunch, it also serves affordable local favourites like fried noodles and rice, soups etc.
Sam is a self taught chef and he runs Big Brother 2 with his brother and mentor Chef Brian whom I met when he was running Ratatouille La Gourmet (which is now closed).
We started with an omelette. I thought it was a generous serving for RM10. This dish alone is filling enough for one person, especially if you are a small eater.
The accompanying salad and fries were nicely done.
Large omelette with chopped vegetables like onion, tomatoes, mushrooms rolled inside its torpedo shape. The outside was lightly browned.
Moist eggy wrap with soft juicy sweet chopped vegetables. Sauces added savoury balance to the eggy, sweet dish.
We like this.
BBQ Pork Ribs. Another huge serving for RM25.
The rack of ribs was enveloped in a BBQ sauce which was a blend of tangy, savoury flavours with touches of pepperiness. There was a subtle smokiness and quite pronounced hickory taste.
Underneath the pork ribs was a bed of boiled spinach and mashed potato - both tasted great.
The meat was tender with a bit of chewy bite. It was moist and fell off the bone easily with light tucks.
The tangy savoury peppery sauce complemented the ribs' mild porky flavour.
There were crunchy cartilage in the rib which I love chewing on.
The pork ribs came with a small bowl of creamy mushroom soup. It was excellent - sweet with layers of mushroomy savouriness. The soup was thick, creamy smooth and the bits of mushroom added interesting spongy bite to the dish.
If this was on the menu, I would gladly order it as a separate dish by itself.
We also ordered this Kampung Fried Rice (RM10) to try Big Brother 2's local favourites.
The rice was fried with prawn, squid, chicken, fish cake slices, fried anchovies, chopped long beans, capsicum, scallion and topped with a fried egg.
The savoury flavour was quite robust and slightly greasy. You will enjoy this tender nutty fried rice if you like strong flavours. It's a full meal for RM10.
The kampung fried rice came with a small dish of sambal chili. The sambal chili was robustly savoury spicy with tangy zing. It was tasty but I didn't really need this as the fried rice was already flavourful enough.
We love this Lava Cake (price RM7).
Why do we love this lava cake? "You own self see lor" as Singaporeans say 😄
We love the warm chocolaty bitter sweet filling and the sweet cake.
Crème brûlée (price RM6).
Soft creamy sweet custard, brittle caramelised sugar, crunchy chocolate chips. Nice Crème brûlée.
👉 Big Brother serves delicious Western and local favourites. Generous portions at reasonable prices. No GST. Earnest attentive service but no service charge 😄 I shall be back for their other dishes especially the Western dishes like steak, lamb, etc. Great desserts too.

Eating Western food in Malaysia or Singapore is very pretentious
ReplyDeleteSo is criticising others over their choice of food :-)
DeleteTeochew people eating Dim Sum, Hakka people eating steamed pomfret, Cantonese people drinking Hainan kopi is equally pretentious. Don't you agree?
