Looking for lunch on a hot, hazy afternoon, we cruised around Mount Austin area to look for an indoor place to eat (and hide a while from the haze).
The cute chicky signboard and catchy name 22 Dul Dul Korean Fried Chicken Factory caught our eyes. So, we pulled over to check it out. (Yeah, you noticed that it is right beside The Alley bubble tea.)
The crowd at 2:30pm, well after lunch time. 22 Fried Chicken Factory is obviously very popular.
22 Chicken is a well established, 30+ year old brand from Korea with over a hundred outlets there. When it first opened in JB in 2015, waiting time for a table was 45 minutes. Today, we can just walk in.
When you are inside. Find an available table, make your orders right at the cashier, pay, return to your table and wait for your food to be served.
We got this signature fried chicken - 6 piece set for RM14.90. There were 3 flavours - Garlic, Gangjeong and Hot BBQ.
We can choose a mix of flavours, so we had 3 Garlic and 3 Hot BBQ. The set comes with fried potato fries smothered with dribbles of cheese and mayonnaise.
I like it that we were given thin plastic gloves to eat the chicken wings with our hands, which was fun.
The chicken wings well coated with thin batter were well fried, crispy outside while plump and juicy inside. Not overly greasy. For the garlic wings, the sauce and marination were robust savoury salty. The Hot BBQ wings were savoury salty spicy hot.
The chicken wings were frozen meat so it had very little, if any natural flavour at all on its own. So, the fried chicken wings relied wholly on the slightly tongue numbing, robust tasting sauces for flavours.
The fries by themselves were nice. With cheese and mayo, the salty sourish taste took over everything.
Kimchi Fried Rice with Chicken Chop set for RM13.90.
The frozen white meat itself had no flavour, so the chicken chop relied on the savoury salty crisp batter for taste.
The fried rice had no toastiness, quite lumpy and soft, but the grains did infused the kimchi flavours so each mouthful was a tasty mix of savoury sweet spicy. It's likeable.
Each set comes with a drink - we opted for green tea which came in a tea bag. There was self service free refills of hot water which we appreciate to deal with the saltiness of the food.
22 Dul Dul Fried Chicken Factory is very popular. It was full house even during off peak when we were there. I quickly grabbed this picture when the family in front of us finished their meal and left. Moments later the tables were filled with other customers.
We like the good value here - less than RM30 and we were full. Overall, the flavours were too strong, too salty for our liking but taste is subjective (judging from 22's popularity). We would have loved this place, if they had used fresh instead of frozen chicken. But, at this pricing, I think this is a fair deal (though frozen is a no no for me).
