Yaw Hau Fok Dim Sum 有口福点心茶楼 | Jalan Suria 2, Taman Malim Jaya, 75250 Melaka, Malaysia ☎ +6012 628 6980 🕚 6:30am - 12:30pm (Tues off) |
I asked Malacca kaki SH to take me to places locals go to for breakfast. And, so here we are, Yaw Hau Fok Dim Sum 有口福点心茶楼 in Malim less than 10km from Jonker Street.
It's a typical shoplot kind of no frills eatery serving the local community. So, the food need to be nice and the price right, in order to survive.
The thing about Yaw Hau Fok is, they hand make their own dim sum piece by piece. So, there is a certain randomness in what they serve and the dim sum come out in batches (drips and drabs, if you want to put it that way).
But hey, dim sum is not fast food. The kitchen brings out whatever they hand made to the tables, steamy hot. In between, we wait, so we must have the time and are prepared.
So yeah, if I live here in Malacca, this randomness, anticipation rewarded by little surprising delights will keep me coming back. I avoid those dim sum places that serve soul less factory made, freeze and reheat stuff no matter how "efficient" they may be.
YHF's lou mai gai was really nice. The sticky glutinous rice was slightly firm and nutty, chewy, not overly greasy and infused with a nice savoury sweet taste and aroma.
The char siew bao filling was generous and tasty but the skin didn't rise to the puffy, fluffiness I like.
I like chili pepper filled with fish paste. YHF's version was nice as the chili was surprisingly spicy, the filling was generous and the fish paste had real fish.
The obligatory siew mai or pork dumpling. Actually, this was quite nice with fresh ingredients.
Pause while the kitchen prepares another batch. Meanwhile, you drink tea and chat which is what the dim sum experience is supposed to be.
Fried fish and prawn roll. Can fry it a bit browner in my humble opinion.
Dumpling style chee cheong fun with shrimp and chive filling. I like this as the rice skin was thin and soft, and the filling was fresh and generous.
YHF is always playing with new creations. This was fish ball filled with salted egg yolk lava, encased in croutons and deep fried.
Steamed pork rib with fermented bean comfort dish of Cantonese people.
The obligatory har gaw or shrimp dumpling.
I like the spicy hot, sour, savoury chili sauce they provide at YHF.
Yaw Hau Fok Dim Sum is nice. When you come, you will have a different experience with us, as the kitchen keeps innovating and changing the menu day to day. Even when you come back on a different day, the staples will be there but you will be entertained by new dim sum creations.
