Wong Dan Kee • It's All About Rice Noodles Chen Cun Fun 黄旦记 陳村粉 Shunde Must Eat Huangdanji


By the time we cleared formalities and got onto our waiting coach at Baiyun Airport, we were already famished 😅

We dashed straight for Shunde (a district of Foshan city in Guangdong). 


Many restaurants in Guangzhou and Shunde take an afternoon break but our driver / guide managed to persuade Wong Dan Kee staff to accommodate us even we though arrived at closing time 🙏

So grateful 🙏

和味凉拌陈村粉 RMB28

We couldn't have the full menu as the kitchen crew had mostly gone off duty. So, we were served mostly simple carb dishes and some dim sum items. 

Needless to say, it dampened slightly my enthusiasm for our much anticipated first meal in Shunde 😔

But, man, my first mouthful of this thin rice noodle brightened my day instantly.

The rice noodles were light, smooth, tissue thin but had a nice tender, yet almost nutty subtle crunch. The noodles had a subtle rice sweetness and fragrance. The light brown slightly greasy sauce added savouriness and aromas (siang 香 or pung) to the noodles. 

It made us curious about what this amazing rice noodle was and they told us that it was Chen Cun fun 陳村粉 or Chan Village noodles. 

This understated, humble looking dish turned out to be Wong Dan Kee's signature and icon. 

牛腩捞陈村粉 RMB38

Stewed beef brisket with broad Chen Cun noodle. Same textureful noodles, now with a savoury beefy sauce and pieces of soft tender savoury beefy sweet stewed beef. 

There's a poetic way to describe the Chen Cun noodles - they are thin and translucent like cicada wings 蝉翼.

Textureful is not an English word but then, that's what it was. There are some Cantonese dishes that are appreciated mainly for their texture, so yeah, the 薄爽滑软 thin, chewy, smooth, soft Chen Cun noodles were textureful. 

鲜虾云吞面 2 portions Wanton noodles RMB52

Angel hair egg noodles, lightly crunchy served in an umami savoury soup with ground pork dumplings. 

但记烧卖皇 Siew mai pork dumpling, 2 servings RMB58

但记虾饺皇 Har kow prawn dumpling 2 servings, RMB58

蒜子醋凤爪 Braised chicken feet RMB25

但记风味鱼皮 RMB24. My first fish skin in Guangzhou / Shunde. I will encounter this frequently during this trip. 

Q Q crunchy and soft. Takes on the flavours of its savoury braising stock. Yeah, one of those textureful dishes. 

顺德炸牛奶 RMB38. Shunde fried water buffalo milk. My first time trying this dish. The outside with spring roll wrap was crisp while the inside reminded me of the sweet cream inside of a cannoli, a bit dense and there wasn't much of it. 

伦教糕 Half portion RMB24. Spongy lightly sweet steamed rice cake.

We were so happy with our "preview" of Wong Dan Kee that we decided to visit another of their outlets the next day. 

Wong Dan Kee is a family type eating place with utilitarian decor and furnishings. The menu focuses on comfort dishes like congee and noodles, with interesting mains at competitive prices. 

The main dining hall is always busy. If you prefer, private rooms are available at a slight surcharge. 

农家白切鸡 Poached chicken half bird RMB68. 

The poached bird came without dressing sauce. The meat was moist tender savoury sweet with quite pronounced chicky flavour of free range bird. We all love it. 

The same familiar grated ginger and scallion oil basted sauce. Yay! 

生滚鸡粥 RMB68, 老火才鱼花生 RMB48. Two different congee, one chicken and one peanut. Nothing to see, as all the ingredients were buried under the thick gruel. 

Savoury sweet, smooth, thick, unremarkable, unmemorable, but hey that's everyday staple comfort food, bro(ther). 

黑椒牛柳炒咳 RMB36

Black pepper beef tenderloin stir-fry with broad rice noodle and beansprout. I was hoping to see and appreciate what wok hei is in a fried beef Chen Cun fun. 

Slight toasty wok hei, fried beef and rice noodle in a savoury, tasty but slightly greasy jumble.

煎让辣椒 RMB48

Chili pepper filled with ground pork, and served pan fried.

I love this dish. 

Nice savoury sweet with embedded bits of aromatics in a fleshy moist vegetable with subtle heat. 

無特色秘制脆彤 RMB59 Crispy deep fried large pork intestines. 

Crisp, chewy, dissolves into moist soft savouriness with subtle hints of heat (from cut chili). 

白豆肉碎浸 RMB38 Soy bean, chopped pork with greens. A sweet savoury comfort dish. 

爽脆酱萝卜条 RMB15 Crunchy moist radish in soy sauce.

After two different outlets in two days, I get it. We enjoyed most of the dishes. 

But, Wong Dan Kee is a Chen Cun noodle specialist. They have many different nice dishes but their noodle dishes are their strength and claim to fame. So, yeah I would be back to try more noodle dishes, and perhaps skip the congee. 

🎗At Wong Dan Kee 黄旦记, it's all about their Chen Cun Fun rice noodles 陳村粉.

Our total bill for first outlet was RMB409 (SG$75) and second outlet RMB440 (SG$81).

For our seven day foodie trip, our total shared food bill came to SGD200 per pax for the entire trip. There were six of us, and we also paid for our driver / guide's share as we invited him to join us during meals.
