CLOSED. Good food is best enjoyed with a good wine. When in Johor, we often pick up a wine or two, and bring it to the restaurant to enjoy it with our food.

The restaurants in Johor are usually BYO (bring your own) friendly. Most Johor restaurants have no corkage charge and those that do, charge only a nominal sum.

There are very few independent wine shops in Johor. The wine shop that I usually patronise in Johor Bahru is Great Terroir in Taman Molek.

At Great Terroir wine shop, Francis, the friendly boss is passionate about his wines and always gives good suggestions about food and wine pairings.



Great Terroir has a good range of Old and New World wines.

Our normal practice to help ensure a happy outing. We drink only in moderation and everyone stay sober at all times. Our designated driver for the night will not drink any alcohol at all for that night :)

联姐 Yong Tau Foo 酿豆腐 Stall @ Kim Ling 金岭 Kopitiam in Taman Perling, Johor Bahru

联姐 who runs the popular kia teow kia stall at Kim Ling kopitiam in Taman Perling, also runs the yong tau foo 酿豆腐 stall.

联姐's Hakka styled yong tau foo stall serves an extensive range of yong tau foo and fried tofu. Everything at 联姐 is home-made.

The generous fresh fish stuffing in 联姐's yong tau foo pieces were light and sweet. Let's take a look at what's available.

Customers can pick any combination of these yong tau foo pieces and have them served in a savoury blended sauce of sweet, spicy and salty flavours, or in a tasty soup. 

This time, I opted for the soup. The popular deep fried tofu skin were still crunchy even after soaking up loads of tasty broth.

The slightly cloudy soup base was made with soy beans, stock bones and anchovies.

I had "mouse" noodles 老鼠粉 for a change.

Kim Ling kopitiam is a convenient spot for group meals as it offers a wide variety of good hawker fare - there is something for everyone. Ample seating, indoors, al fresco and there is also an air conditioned section. 联姐's Yong Tau Foo stall adds to Kim Ling's already wide range of food choices available.

Famous No Name Fish Ball Noodles @ Mengkibol River Hawker Centre in Kluang Johor

Update 22 Aug 2019. Actually, we just wanted to go to the Claytan reject store in Ayer Hitam to buy some cheap imperfect fine china. But, Claytan opens at 10:30am - we were too early, so we decided to push on to Kluang for breakfast before returning back to Ayer Hitam. We wandered into Mengkibol River hawker centre and stumbled upon a busy fish ball noodle stall.

Ah Meng restaurant 阿明家乡小炒 is tucked away in a corner just off Taman Sentosa, in quiet Taman Iskandar. Ah Meng is actually the son-in-law of Ah Kaw, the supposed inventor of san lou bee hoon 三楼炒米粉.

Or Hwu 永平五湖 in Yong Peng is one of those old must-try restaurants that has attained icon status in town. When in Yong Peng, it is almost obligatory to come to the 40 year old Or Hwu and experience what such an iconic restaurant is like.

(CLOSED - please share if you know where the stall have moved to.) We were looking for Yuen Fatt mooncakes in Kluang when we stumbled upon this queue of people waiting at the corner chicken rice stall, just across the street from the famous mooncake shop.

Mooncake festival 中秋节 is around the corner and Johor Kaki is on the hunt for the best mooncakes in Johor 😄 Yuen Fatt 源發餅家 in Kluang was introduced to me by Euggin Lim from WGOIJB. Thanks, Euggin!

Today, I went on the 100km journey from Johor Bahru to Kluang in search of Yuen Fatt, one of Johor's most famous mooncakes.

Seafood Section Closed - Lobsters at Straits View Seafood Restaurant 海景轩海鲜酒家 in Sungai Rengit, Pengerang, Johor, Malaysia

The lobster sculpture in the town square makes it clear what Sungai Rengit is about.

I was in Johor's Lobster Town, Sungai Rengit, Pengerang at lunch time today. Here in Sungai Rengit, I had "little choice" but to indulge myself in the local speciality - which is lobster, of course.

I counted at least 8 major seafood restaurants in little Sungai Rengit town itself. Since I recently tried the benchmark lobster at Jade Garden, I decided to indulge in a little risk taking by trying another restaurant instead.

I picked the newly opened Straits View 海景轩海鲜酒家 which is located at the junction of Jalan Besar and Jalan Pasar (the only two main streets in Sungai Rengit town, Pengarang).

This was the handsome 400 gram fellow, who (unfortunately for him) caught my eye.

Lobster pricing is seasonal. Current pricing at Straits View is RM120/kg for medium sized and RM160/kg for large sized.

MR lobster was dispatched with a quick sharp blow.

I asked for MR lobster to be prepared with "superior broth" 上湯. The lobsters can be done in other ways like fried with butter, black pepper, chili, or steamed.

Straits View's lobster was beautifully done. The succulent flesh came off the shell easily in a neat single piece.

Look at the inviting plump, juicy lobster flesh layered with a golden creamy gravy. The lobster flesh was naturally sweet, tender, yet firm and slightly bouncy.

I thoroughly enjoyed my lobster at Straits View Seafood.

Besides lobster, Straits View also has fish, prawns and crabs as well as egg, vegetable and pork dishes on its menu. The boss also told me that Straits View may be adding crocodile meat on its menu in the future.
