P'Yai Thai Restaurant in Johor Bahru, Taman Impian Emas
I was invited to visit P'Yai Thai restaurant in Taman Impian Emas by Junn, one of it's owners.
P'Yai Thai is a popular restaurant known for it's authentic Thai cuisine. The restaurant is named after P'Yai, the Thai head chef. P'Yai had worked in well known Thai restaurants in JB and KL for over a decade, before coming to P'Yai Thai.
Inside P'Yai Thai Restaurant, the decor and furnishings are basic and no frills, but it is clean and comfortable.
A few beautiful hand drawn Thai elephant murals adorn the simple restaurant.
It was a hot day, so we started with a couple of refreshing Thai coconuts.
The chilled Thai coconuts (RM5.50 each) did wonders on a blistering hot, gloomy, hazy March day in Johor. The fragrant sweet juice was refreshing, the soft white meat was delicious and the coconut served as an appetizer to whet our appetites.
First to land was the Sizzling Tofu (RM17.90) on a hot iron plate. The tofu may be ordinary but the spices and the fresh chunks of bell peppers, green peas, garlic, eggs, squid, shrimp and fish were delightfully delicious.
This Sizzling Tofu was very spicy and it turned out to be our favourite of the day. Must Try, if you can handle spicy food.
The Green Curry Beef with Basil Leaf (RM18.90) is worth a try for green curry lovers.
Crunchy fresh vegetables in creamy, sweet, mildly spicy coconut gravy spiked with hot spices and chili with aromatics from basil leaves.
The Steamed Fish in Spicy Lime Sauce (RM31.90) is another of our favourites of the day. I like the humble red tilapia fish because it is tender and it's rather bland meat takes on sauces and flavours well. The sharp tangy, garlicky, spicy sauce complemented the bland tilapia meat nicely.
P'Yai Thai's rendition of this Thai classic Pandan Chicken (RM21.90 for 6 pieces) was one of the best that I have tried in Malaysia and Singapore.
The chunk of chicken thigh was slightly crisp outside while inside it was still tender and moist. The spices were flavourful and the pandan leaves imparted a pleasant aroma into the meat.
Curious, we tried the Thai Otak Otak (RM20.90) which turned out to be quite different from the Malaysian variety.
It's more like a large spicy scrambled egg omelette wrapping seafood and crunchy vegetables. Quite interesting and tasty.
For dessert, we opted for this Thai version of ABC with crunchy "red rubies" and santan (RM4.50). I enjoyed the crunch and tenderness of the "red rubies" which are water chestnut cubes wrapped in tapioca flour.
P'Yai Thai is a good place for authentic Thai food at reasonable prices.
