Irene kept raving about Sifu Omar's Halal Penang Hokkien mee during my Penang trip, and we finally got to try it on the last day before I boarded the plane home.
Sifu Omar's Hokkien Mee stall is at Kafe Goodall 万和饮食中心 which is actually a humble food court opposite Fettes Residences (35 storey condo) along Jalan Tanjung Tokong in Penang.
Cifu Omar, the Penang Hokkien mee Sifu. Didn't have a chance to speak with him as Cifu Omar was extremely busy and focused.
Cifu Omar's Hokkien mee is proudly served in a ceramic bowl and with utensils nicer than most shopping mall food courts.
Cifu Omar's Hokkien mee is Halal but there is no compromise in flavours. Indeed, the mild savoury sweetness of chicken makes it easier to discern the layers of flavours with the shrimp's crustacean savouriness. The layered savouriness is balanced with sweetness.
The broth and noodles are garnished with egg, shrimps, chicken, "crab" stick, kang kong greens and fried shallots.
The sweet little shelled prawns that are one of the hallmarks of Penang Hokkien mee.
Kang kong greens, another mark of authentic Penang Hokkien mee.
I always believe that good sambal chili is one of the keys of good Penang Hokkien mee, and Cifu Omar's savoury spicy sweet chili packs a stinging punch.
Stir that sambal chili into the chicken and prawn broth, and voila! you have Cifu Omar's power Halal Hokkien Mee.
Cifu Omar's Hokkien mee tastes so good that he has fans from all communities.
Thanks to Cifu Omar's Halal Hokkien mee, everyone can enjoy this Penang food icon.
