For your next Penang trip, I highly recommend dropping by Entopia by Penang Butterfly Farm for a couple of hours. But, I cannot guarantee that you will not be mesmerised by the beautiful butterflies and end up staying longer than you planned 😄 I had to be pulled away to get on the bus 😂
Entopia is a strikingly eye catching building. Blanketed by plants, Entopia holds the title of Malaysia's largest "green wall".
Located in Teluk Bahang, getting to Entopia is really easy. It is just 20 minutes by car from Batu Ferringhi. It is accessible by Rapid Penang public bus from Weld Quay (bus 101), Penang Airport (bus 102) and Balik Pulau (bus 501). Alternatively, use Hop on-Hop off bus Beach Route (stop 21).
Entopia covers 100,000 sq ft in two sections - Natureland ("outdoor" garden) and Cocoon (exhibits and learning centre).
The Cocoon has two storeys of self learning stations and live insect exhibits with friendly and knowledgeable staff.
Giant Madagascan roaches 😱
Scorpions are not blue, they just look blue under UV light 😄
Watch beautiful butterflies break free of their cocoons and spread their pretty wings. Now, I realised that some cocoons are gleaming gold in colour and shaped like big groundnuts.
The Cocoon is a favourite with children as they come up close and personal with creepy crawlies.
For me, my favourite is Natureland which features 200 species of flora providing a natural habitat for 50 species of 15,000 free flying butterflies.
When I was a child, there used to be free flying butterflies in Singapore. Catching and identifying butterflies was a popular pastime for children in 1960s Singapore. I have not seen any butterflies or moths for a long time in Singapore already.

I was most fascinated by the Monarch butterfly way back then. So, coming to Entopia was like reliving my childhood.
Back to Natureland, it is filled with waterfalls, ponds, rock formations and other interesting garden features.
Entopia is a macro photographer's haven as there are plenty of opportunities to get up close and personal with the butterflies. (All my photos are shot with a handphone camera. So, you will get even better results with a DSLR and macro lens.)
A Blue Glassy Tiger butterfly.
Not sure what species is this. Can you help?
This looks related to Great Helen butterfly.
Peacock Pansy.
Red Lacewing butterfly.
Butterfly experts, please help me. I couldn't identify the following butterflies below 😂
There are many more species of butterflies which I did not managed to shoot before they dragged me on to the bus 😂
The grand finale before we left was Vita Nova - releasing a butterfly which just emerged from its cocoon. The custom of Vita Nova is to make a wish and let the butterfly carry it to the sky.
If you love someone, set him/her free. If s/he shares your feelings, s/he will come back to you. (Adapted from Jess Lair quote.)
Happiness is like a butterfly. Chase after it and it will fly away. Follow your passion and when you least expect it, happiness will come to you like a butterfly. (Adapted from Henry David Thoreau quote.)
If you come to Entopia, you will greatly increase your chances of a butterfly landing on your shoulder 😄
