玉梅潮州面薄 Restoran Seri Tebrau | 25, Jalan Keris 1, Taman Sri Tebrau, 80050 Johor Bahru ☏ +6017 776 2481 ⏰ 7am - 1pm (Weds off) |
✍️4 Apr 2025. Lau Tee's Teochew noodle has a special place in the hearts of old Johor Bahru folks. Since Lau Tee's passing (a long time ago), his nephew Ah Seng's stall Sang Heng had been carrying the flag of Lau Tee's legacy. Uncle Ah Seng passed on in 2016.
Yue Mei, one of Uncle Ah Seng's long time helpers has since opened her own stall 玉梅潮州面薄 serving Lau Tee's style of Teochew noodles.
玉梅 was initially at Jalan Lumba Kuda but moved here in Taman Seri Tebrau when the former closed for renovation.
玉梅 has assumed the mettle of her former boss well.
The humble space in Restoran Seri Tebrau was filled with customers, mostly local folks who order with the codeword 一样.
Customer steps in.
玉梅: 一样?
Customer: 一样.
I also 一样 🤭
Mee pok noodle dry with a bowl of soup with fish ball and pork ball.
First thing first, has to be the soup. Yes, it's there. The first thing that hit my palette was the crustacean umami followed by balanced savoury and porcine sweetness. Yup, 玉梅's soup is reminiscent of uncle Ah Seng's. Perhaps, a shade milder but anyone can tell it has Lau Tee DNA.
The handmade fish ball was tender (not soft) spongy crunchy juicy savoury sweet. Nice.
There's a KL style pork ball. I don't remember uncle Ah Seng having pork ball in his Teochew mee but it worked well, blending in into the bowl of soup and fish balls.
The same mound of mee pok noodle with sauce, and topped with minced pork, prawn, fish cake slices, fried shallot, lard croutons and scallion. That's all.
I am glad Yue Mei fry their own shallot, so they were fresh and aromatic.
The mee pok needs quite diligent tossing to spread the lard, shallot oil, and savoury sauce through the noodles, partly because the sauce was sparse.
Flavour profile is nostalgic but quite mildly umami savoury lardy aromatic. Johor Bahru folks love this. I appreciate it too. (Some may find it too mild, too little.)
Whereas uncle Ah Seng will add in chili and vinegar at your request, Yue Mei lets you add them on your own.
It's slightly more watery than Ah Seng's version but taste about the same savoury spicy. Maybe slightly less intense.
Yue Mei also has braised chicken feet.
It's nice. Soft tissue well infused with savoury sauce flavours.
Thanks to Yue Mei, we can enjoy JB Lau Ah Tee's legacy Teochew noodles for a few more years.

✍7 May 2019. Buddy Claire tagged me on Facebook about Yook Mooi Teochew Mee Pok 玉梅潮州面薄 - another Lao Tee style noodle stall. Johor Bahru oldies would know what excitement such news bring to JB foodies. (Thanks Claire for the tip off!)

Founded in 1942, Lao Tee's style of Teochew mee pok is legend in Johor Bahru. After Lao Tee passed on, his legacy is carried on in three places:
🍜 Sang Heng which was ran by Ah Seng, Lao Tee's brother (Ah Seng had passed on in 2017)
🍜 A stall in 13 Yaw coffee shop by Ah Ngiap, Lao Tee's worker
🍜 A shop by Lao Tee's grandson (which still uses the brand Lao Tee)
🍜 This latest stall Yook Mooi Teochew Mee Pok 玉梅潮州面薄 is by Ah Seng's worker.

Yook Mooi had been Uncle Ah Seng's helper for many years. You can see her in a yellow T-shirt and white jockey cap in one of the photos in my 2016 blog post on Uncle Ah Seng's stall 👈 click.
She opened her own Teochew mee pok stall a month ago.

Everything is there in Yook Mooi's rendition of the classic Lao Tee Teochew mee - blanched minced lean pork, fish cake slices, shelled shrimp, lard, lard crackling, chili sauce, blended savoury sauce, fried shallot, spring onion etc. (I opted for mee kia instead of mee pok which was my default for decades, but my taste have changed... .)

Yook Mooi's noodles were cooked to the doneness I like - tender with a light springy bite. Nice layered blend of layered savouriness from the sauce and lard. The chili sauce provided a bit of gentle heat. Yook Mooi doesn't provide a lot of sauce, so you will have to toss the noodles vigorously to spread it evenly.

The light bodied savoury soup was tasty with quite pronounced prawny crustacean type savouriness.

I like the handmade fish balls as they had fresh fish taste and a nice spring to the bite. The pork ball didn't have much flavour other than mild savoury saltiness. It was also not as dense as I like.

Information for you 👉 Truth be told, Yook Mooi's rendition is a shade less tasty than Ah Ngiap or Lao Tee's grandson's versions. But, Yook Mooi's noodles definitely have Lao Tee's DNA and is a good option when you need a light breakfast near the CIQ (on the Jalan Lumba Kuda side).
