Seeing that there is always a long queue for Hong Kong roasts at 洪记烧腊鸡饭 during lunch, we came early to Restoran Oktober coffee shop in Johor Jaya (Bakawali side) to try it out.
洪记烧腊鸡饭's roast duck, pork belly, char siew, poached chicken and fried chicken are ready from around 9am-10am. They also have braised tofu and eggs which seemed popular with the folks here.
Boss, Mr. Lim hails from Muar, Johor. He worked in Singapore before going to Klang (near KL) to learn his craft from a roast master from Hong Kong. Mr. Lim founded 洪记烧腊鸡饭 over 30 years ago. All Mr. Lim's roasts are grilled over charcoal fire.
Took this obligatory flat lay, 5 minutes into our meal 🤭 I am no Instagrammer material 😂 So, please pardon the "eaten" look of the dishes 😛
We had a ¼ roast duck, roast pork belly and char siew. Everything here came to RM41.
The golden brown roast duck skin was only slightly crisp and a bit soft. But, the smokey savoury flavour tasted good. There was also a nice subtle toasty aroma from the skin.
The meat inside was tender and juicy with savoury sweet flavours. I like it that 洪记烧腊鸡饭's roast duck is relatively sweet with subtle underlying duck taste. (This is not the JB style which has herb flavour, usually dang gui 当归.)
洪记烧腊鸡饭's char siew are made with pork belly (not collar 猪颈肉, not "armpit" 不见天).
I asked Mr. Lim for the fatty cut 😄 Mr. Lim shared that most people prefer the lean cut nowadays (even in JB 😂 ).
The char siew was tender and moist, and the flavour was savoury with slight sweetness.
The thing I like most at 洪记烧腊鸡饭 is their roast pork or sio bak (Hokkien) or siew yok (Cantonese). I feel it is among the best that I have tasted. Probably the best at this price point.
The light snappy crackle and savoury taste of the roast pork skin was outstanding. The tender meat and juicy fat contained mild savoury flavours.
I like my roast pork to have mild flavours with subtle underlying fresh pork taste (as average sio bak tend to be too salty for me).
Recommended for you 👍 Good char siew, better roast duck, and the thing I recommend here at 洪记烧腊鸡饭 is their excellent roast pork belly (sio bak).
When you are in Kuala Lumpur and you love sio bak, make sure to drop by Wong Mei Kee for their legendary roast pork belly. It's a little extravagant at RM110 per kilo but the taste is worth every sen to their fans 👈 click
