Dropped by Hainanese Village hawker centre in Hougang this morning to try a newly opened fried carrot cake stall.
Chinese name is 聚名香, while English sign just says Fried Carrot Cake.
Fans of Ah Hui Long House Big Prawn Noodle will remember James. Ah Hui Long House at Balestier used to serve fried carrot cake as a side dish beside their signature big prawn noodle.
Ah Hui Long House closed last year. Now, James is offering his popular fried carrot cake at Hainanese Village in Hougang.
We tried one black and one white version. Truth be told, they don't look outstanding, and it did crossed my mind for a moment if we were going to be able to finish them. I am very stingy with my carb quota 😬
I went for the egg (white) version first because it look less plain 🤭
Turned out it was beyond my expectations.
It wasn't overly greasy 👍 The kway (rice cake) was tender (not soft). It had a subtle umami savoury flavour complemented by egginess and mild sweetness from the rice kway.
The optional (self help) dollop of sambal was good. It added its umami savoury mildy spicy hot taste to the fried carrot cake.
James added a secret something to his sambal 🤭
The black version was even duller looking but certainly no sloth in the taste department.
Sweet soft tender kway overlaid with umami savouriness.
Just dark soy sauce. So simple, so tasty.
We (actually mostly me) demolished the two plates of fried carrot cake but forgot to take a picture.
At the other end of Hainanese Village hawker centre, there's Hup Huat, the carrot cake stalwart here. I like Hup Huat as well. You can try it too 👈 click
If you are a fan (there are many) of Ah Hui Prawn Noodle's fried carrot cake, your favourite cai tow kway is now at Hainanese Village in Hougang.
