Toramaru Wagyu Yakiniku | 195, Jalan Sri Pelangi, Taman Pelangi, 80400 Johor Bahru ☏ +6010 668 5855 ⏰ 12 noon - 2:30 pm | 6pm - 11pm (Tues off) |
Visited the newly opened Toramaru Japanese restaurant in Pelangi which main attraction is wagyu beef.
Wagyu literally means Japanese cow, and four of the breeds, in particular are renowned for their exceptional intramuscular fat. These appear as streaky white "spider webs" throughout the cut of beef.
Wagyu fat is omega 3 monounsaturated fat. In the mouth, it is light, and literally melt-in-the-mouth i.e. the warmth inside our mouth is enough to turn the fat into juice. The melting fat makes wagyu juicy, soft tender to the bite.
Wagyu fat juice tastes sweet and when combined with beefy lean meat produces a deliciously balanced blend of beefy, savoury, and sweet flavours.
In comparison, American Angus for example, have less intramuscular fat and so its beefiness have less complementary sweetness. Beefy or beefy sweet, it depends on your personal preference and even mood of the moment 😂 Personally, I like beefy sweet and tender, so tend to enjoy wagyu more.
The best place to taste wagyu is in Japan, of course, duh!
In Johor, a good place to experience this Japanese culinary specialty is Toramaru Wagyu Yakiniku in Taman Pelangi. All wagyu at Toramaru are imported directly from Japan and have the highest marbling score 5 rating.
When you enter Toramaru, you are immediately sheltered from the often blistering tropical heat outside.
And, you will be greeted by the centrepiece, a large open kitchen with bar seats.
There are several private booths, either four or six seaters.
Every charcoal (or electric) stove is equipped with an individual state-of-the-art suction and exhaust system. I didn't feel cooking fumes and smells getting into my hair and clothes.
Different sauces to go with our wagyu. There's Toramaru Special Sauce, Rich Sesame Sauce, Moon Sauce (with raw egg), Roasted Garlic Sauce, Spicy Sauce.
(Grounded) Beef sauce sizzling in a hot stone bowl (price RM6++).
Enjoy with raw lettuce wrap or slathered over boiled white rice, both taste equally good.
Special Marinated Raw Beef (price RM42++).
Enjoy the marinated raw beef, sesame seed and egg mix with sticks of crunchy fruit wrapped in toasted dried seaweed.
Toramaru Special Platter RM158++ (220 grams). Seasoned with teriyaki sauce.
Three different cuts. All soft, spongy to the bite, juicy savoury sweet toasty flavours. An affordable indulgence at RM158++ for 220 grams.
Thin sliced beef tongue (price RM68++).
I like beef tongue for their spongy bite and dairy milky flavour. Grilling it imparted a subtle smokey toasty flavour.
Garlic wagyu (price RM74++).
The beefy sweet grilled wagyu with a slight toasty garlicky taste of fried garlic bits.
I like this karubi soup a lot (price RM29++). The sweetness of onion, vegetable, egg and karubi beef with mild spice. They have a karubi beef soup with rice set (price RM29++) which I can see myself coming in for, alone.
Grilled rice (onigiri price RM16++).
We enjoyed our wagyu with Dassai 23 Junmai Daijinjo sake. Sweet leaning to my palate, I like. The house pour is Dassai 45 Junmai Daijinjo.
Besides wagyu, Toramaru serves chicken and seafood dishes. It is a good option for birthdays and other celebrations as the space is well appointed, the main attraction wagyu is good and Toramaru also serves seafood and chicken dishes (no pork, no lard), prices are competitive, and conveniently located in Taman Pelangi.
