Got bitten by chicken rice envy after seeing kaki kaki post her lunch at Dian Xiao Er Chicken Rice 店小二鸡饭 in Gelang Patah a few times 🙄


So, today kaki kaki agreed to put me out of my misery and brought me to her favourite chicken rice at Dian Xiao Er stall in Lok Sin Hwee 乐心园 coffeeshop in Gelang Patah.

Lok Sin Hwee is a typical Malaysian small town coffee shop. Bare bones furnishings but comfortable and clean. 

Note (May 2026): Lok Sin Hwee is scheduled for renovation soon. Dian Xiao Er will temporarily move to the coffeeshop next door and move back to Lok Sin Hwee when renovation is completed.

Dian Xiao Er has poached free range "bare neck chicken" 光颈鸡 from small holdings in Simpang Rengam and Labis.

Deep fried American broilers. 

Chef Yap worked many years in Singapore restaurants before opening his chicken rice stall in 2006 in Nusa Bestari, then moving here in Gelang Patah three years ago.

Chef Yap also serves char siew, siew yok and roasted sausages.

Menu and pricing.

We had half a poached 光颈鸡, Dian Xiao Er's signature. A bit of char siew, siew yok, roasted sausage and chicken offal.

The mound of yellow hue chicken came splashed with a savoury sweet blend of soy sauce and aromatic oil. There's a lot of meat as the 110-day old bird was nearly 2kg huge.

Pro-tip: We can request chef Yap to serve the dressing sauce in a separate bowl.

The bird was poached to the doneness I like. Trace of pink in the bone, none in the meat.

The skin was soft tenderly smooth chewy 爽滑, with a layer of aspic or jellied fat just beneath it. The meat was tender 嫩 and moist.

Together, the skin, fat and meat was rich with natural chicky sweetness 香甜 with every bite.

The meat was tender with a slight chew to the bite 咬劲, not mushy soft.


The rice cooked in chicken stock and aromatics was nutty, tender and flavourfully savoury sweet.

The ginger relish, chili sauce and sweetened dark soy sauce were all on point.

To me, the sweetened dark soy sauce does wonders to the rice.

DXE provides a different soup every day. Today, it was winter melon and chicken soup. So comforting, homely nice.

Marvellous Kuala Lumpur style 半肥瘦 poon fei sow or half fat lean char siew. Infused savoury sweet marinate flavours in the juicy sweet fat and tender meat with a subtle toasty char overlay. Chef Yap roasts his meats in an Apollo oven at the stall.

It is reason enough to make a trip to Gelang Patah just for the char siew and DXE's chicken rice makes it triplely worth it.

Nice crackly skin, juicy fat, tender meat siew yok (roast pork belly). Flavour leaned slightly on the salty side for my taste buds.

I love the savoury sweet pork sausage.

I rate Dian Xiao Er chicken rice 9/10 on the Johor Kaki chicken rice rating system.
