Johor Bahru is sometimes referred to as "Little Swatow" 小汕头 because the main Chinese community, most old JB folks 老新山 here are Teochew. Swatow or Shantou is a major city in the Chaoshan region of Guangdong province where Teochew people came from in China.

I haven't been back for a few years as food hunting has taken me away in search of Johor's other hidden gems. Ah Hua kway teow hasn't changed a bit - the owners have kept it true to tradition.

✍ 7 Nov 2012. Johor Bahru is sometimes known as the "小汕头 Little Swatow" as most Chinese here are Teochews. Stalls and shops selling the Teochew style of kway teow thng 粿條汤 are therefore found in nearly every corner of JB.

Ah Hua Kway Teow Thng 亚华粿條汤 is one of the oldest and most famous of JB's Teochew kway teow thng. Founded in 1957, the original shop used to be in Plentong, Masai in the northeastern part of JB downtown JB at Jalan Segget. This contemporary, spic and spank shop in Taman Century (near to KSL Resort) is run by one of the founder's sons with his wife and young son.

Fortunately, Ah Hua only moved across the street (Jalan Segget) just a stone's throw away.
