I was invited to try the newly opened WaWa Korean Fried Chicken stall in Johor Bahru's City Square Mall. I was happy to try it as I have never tasted Korean fried chicken before even though it had been the rage for a while now in Singapore and Kuala Lumpur.

WaWa is a small shop kiosk in City Square Mall with minimum and simple furnishings. The kiosk has got the feel of a street side stall (and in air con comfort).

WaWa Chicken is a homegrown brand - the baby of three young people - 2 Johoreans and 1 Korean. Wawa means "come, come" in Korean.

Only local chilled chicken is used - never frozen ones. The chicken is fried only when there is an order, so customers only get freshly fried chicken. There may be a slight wait during peak hours but I think it is worth it.

WaWa Chicken's fried chicken menu is very simple - just soy sauce, spicy soy sauce and cheese. That's it.

We were given thin plastic gloves to eat our Korean fried chicken which is very handy.

Chicken Wings RM12.90 for 3 pieces

I tried the extra spicy (best selling) version first. The wing was the standard size kind. The fried chicken flesh inside was wet with warm juices and naturally sweet.

The skin was fried to a crackly crisp with a layer of savoury sweet marinade and just a bit of spiciness (for my taste buds). I like this crispy yet juicy style of chicken wings.

Chicken Drumsticks RM13.90 for 3 pieces

Next, the soy sauce version. The drumstick was a little on the small side. Similar yet different from our local Singapore/ Malaysia soy marinade, and delicious. Same juicy meaty flesh inside with very crispy skin.

I tried the cheese dusted version last, thinking that it is the "strangest" flavour for chicken wings.

I was so wrong.

It turned out to be my favourite.  The nice juicy chicken flesh and natural flavours were there. And, on the crispy skin it's layers of savouriness and sweetness that complemented the fried chicken very well.

Rice Box Combo RM15.90, comprising one wing, drumstick and drumlet with rice drizzled with mayonnaise and soy sauce.

All the fried chicken pieces were still crispy to the end, though it is still best eaten when it is piping hot.

Snow Potato RM4.90. A whole potato, cut, fried and dusted with cheese powder. It's texture is like French fries inside with a crisp around the edges (from the potato skin).

WaWa Chicken is just across the aisle from Ajisen Ramen in City Square Mall Innercity on Level 3.

If you are a fried chicken/ chicken wing lover, Korean fried chicken is an interesting option and WaWa is a good choice in JB.

  3. This spicy soy chicken is awesome, delicious and good for sharing with friends or family. If only they could produce the same result every time (once/twice they could overcook/undercook a little), it will be almost perfect!

  4. We tried the drumstick. 3 Medium spicy and 3 Honey ones. Chicken is not fresh. Foul taste on the meat. Bone is already black. Disappointed
