Restoran Kapitan in George Town is one of the most famous eateries in the UNESCO World Heritage Site renowned for it's diverse delicious food.

Restoran Kapitan is located along busy Lebuh Chulia near Penang's Little India.

The popular restaurant is directly across the road from Masjid Kapitan Keling built in 1801.

Not surprisingly Restoran Kapitan is full house at lunch (and dinner) time. Don't worry, there are ample additional seats available upstairs.

The menu and prices are prominently displayed on the wall at the counter. So, we can refer to this menu when deciding what to eat. There is nasi kandar, tandoori chicken, kebabs, naan, thosai and briyani, all at reasonable prices.

Restoran Kapitan is famous for their tandoori chicken which is given a searing sizzle on the griddle just before serving.

So, Kapitan's tandoori chicken have a slight crisp and char on the outside.

I am in a group of twelve delegates, so to keep things simple, our host ordered a mixed platter for each us. All of us had the same things on a shiny cafeteria type steel serving tray.

We each had a large piece of tandoori chicken. I did not specify what cut of chicken I wanted and was given a breast.

The meat was quite stiff and dry. There wasn't much or any chicken flavour but I liked the taste from the masala and spices. I also like the nice crisp on the outside and the smokey flavour from the slight char. But, I didn't enjoy this much as the meat was fibrous, dry and stiff.

The large fresh prawn was meaty and delicious. It was cooked some hours ahead of time and served when there is an order. Would have been perfect if it was cooked a la minute as the flesh would be juicier, more bouncy and have a more distinct crustacean flavour.

The meaty squid was cooked till the flesh was slightly stiff and firm.

The briyani was made with starchy rice (instead of basmati rice). It was aromatic from spices but the starchy grains stick together and was slightly too wet.

I will definitely come back to Restoran Kapitan as I like the ambiance here at the restaurant and also the entire bustling area it is located. I would also love to try other interesting items in Restoran Kapitan's extensive menu.

When I come back, I will go for Kapitan's tandoori chicken again and this time I will specify that I want thigh only.

Here are some dishes other customers were eating and I asked their permission to photograph it before they dug in ;-D

This tandoori chicken thigh on naan looks oh so juicy and tender. It's high on my to-eat list :-D

Restoran Kapitan's chicken thigh with briyani in a pot also looked so delicious.

I would also love to try Restoran Kapitan's signature Chicken Milani.

  2. You should eat their claypot briani (mutton or chicken) and garlic naan. Their red sauce is to die for!
