We paid a visit to Teck Lai in Taman Gaya yesterday - one of my favourite places for mee hoon kueh in Johor Bahru. I like Teck Lai's mee hoon kway and ban mian which is served with fish soup loaded with fried fish and tofu.
I was glad to spot Mdm Chew's busy stall at the corner of Hao Kee coffeeshop as I have not seen her for over two years already.
Mdm Chew and her husband had been running Teck Lai for over 30 years. They took a break five years ago. When they reopened in 2013, they moved here in Taman Gaya. Teck Lai was previously at Taman Johor Jaya (Teratai).
Many of Teck Lai's customers lost track of the shop after they closed the Johor Jaya shop. Mdm Chew thanked me for my previous post on Teck Lai as many of her lost customers reconnected with her after reading the post :-D
We each indulged in a bowl of the RM9 version of mee hoon kway with mackerel, dory fish, tofu and fried anchovies.
The hand torn mee hoon kueh were all of different shapes but roughly the same size. Teck Lai's mee hoon kueh is quite thick, and has a soft chewy mouth feel.
The chunky fried mackerel steaks, which Mdm Chew's husband prepares every morning at the stall at 5:00am.
Fried lightly battered dory fish.
I love this fried tofu with it's crispy fried skin and soft creamy inside that has the gentle soy bean taste.
Teck Lai's broth is clear and made only with fish. Fish lovers will love the lightness and "purity" of the fish broth. Pork lovers will find that the broth lacked the layers of savouriness of a fish and pork blend.
Since I have not tasted Teck Lai's freshly made ban mian for a long time, I decided to get a bowl of it today.
We decided to have another go at the RM9 version :-D
Teck Lai's ban mian is thick with a soft chewy texture which many people like.
Teck Lai provides a simple chili dip blended with light soy sauce. It's a savoury spicy hot blend that enhances the flavour of everything in the bowl.
Teck Lai opens early for breakfast at Hao Kee coffeeshop in Taman Gaya, so it is a good pit stop if you are heading north from JB via the Terbrau Highway.
->> One of my favourite fish noodle soup, mee hoon kueh stalls. Fresh fish, freshly made noodles and kueh, tasty clear broth, spicy power chili sauce.

Which is your favourite mee hoon kway / ban mian stall in Singapore / Malaysia?
Back to Johor Kaki homepage.
Wow, loaded with fried tenggeri pieces. Looks yummy. (Pn CLH)
ReplyDeleteWe were there at 12.30 pm on a Saturday recently and found the stall closed with nobody around. So perhaps advisable to go earlier on weekends.
ReplyDeleteWe went to the Restoran San Law a short drive away instead and their sanlo beehoon turned out to be pretty good, more crispy and bigger portion than the Ah Kaw and San Low versions.
Wow..!!! Really nice..!!! Fish are super fresh..!!!

Went there today at 11.30am and they were closed :-(
ReplyDeleteFinally got to taste the fried fish noodles on my third try. Not bad indeed, the fried mackerel can be considered quite fresh (many stalls in S'pore use not-so-fresh fish to serve them fried).
ReplyDeleteThe boss-couple were not around, the stall is manned by two aunties. RM8.50 version comes with only fried fish, no dory fish and tauhu. Asked for extra ikan bilis as the portion in the bowl was quite little and was charged RM1.00 extra (the aunty said it's the boss' instructions). Although the food is not too bad, probably no return trips for me as IMO its's not quite value-for-money (Joe).
Went for lunch yesterday. The children has taken over the stall. Taste profile changed.
