Mat Corner at Medan Selara Mahsuri in Bandar Baru Uda is one of the best known nasi ambang stalls in Johor Bahru.
Mat Corner is popular with local residents, workers and students in the Bandar Baru Uda (BBU) area.
Mat Corner founded by Haji Mat in 2000 is synonymous with nasi ambang in Johor Bahru. The stall is now run by Haji Mat's three sons, Alwi, Udin and Pen.
Mat Corner's food such as their crispy fried chicken is freshly cooked at the stall.
Each plate of nasi ambang is given a splash of Mat Corner's signature sambal chili.
The fiery looking sambal chili smothering the rice certainly looks intimidating, but it is just right for me. The sambal chili is spicy, savoury and sweet with spice flavours and aroma.
Mat Corner uses good quality long grain rice for their nasi ambang.
The freshly fried chicken is crispy golden brown outside and juicy tender inside. The chicken is infused with mild spices so it is flavoursome with hints of spicy heat.
The "special" version (RM7 2016 price) comes with beef rendang (in addition to the standard fried chicken). The beef rendang cubes are tender and juicy. Every bite releases the perfume of spices infused in it's fibres.
There were a couple of these tiny, not too salty crispy salted fish on the plate.
The look of this golden brown tempeh (soy bean cakes) makes me hungry.
A small clump of savoury sweet serunding kelapa (fried spiced grated coconut ) completes the dish.
