ВаВа Мее Нun Кuеу📍Wan Chang Kopitiam Setia Indah Johor Bahru • Lovingly Hand Made Comfort Food 万昌美食阁

Kaki kaki AW spotted a mee hoon kway stall in Setia Indah, JB which she likes very much.

So I came to give it a try. (Can take bus J11, if you want to try taking bus but it is a 45 minute circuitous ride from JB Sentral bus interchange. Fare is RM3.)

This is a very good mee hoon kway, because every component of the homely dish is meticulously put together with heart 👍

The kuey is made from scratch, hand kneaded, rolled and torn, piece by piece by stallholder Ms 黄.

The stall is named BaBa because it is made according to the recipe of Ms 黄's father.

Take a number and wait after ordering. Be patient because Ms 黄 has a following and she makes everything personally by hand.

RM8 set came with house made sambal and fried ikan bilis and shallot.

The hand torn kuey had uneven thickness, generally thick, irregular shapes, mostly large pieces, smooth, tender, had sweet taste and fragrance of freshly cooked wheat dough.

I prefer this kind of kuey than those uniformly thin ones because every piece, and so every mouthful feels different.

Sorry, I am a mani cai 马尼菜 (sayur manis) Nazi, meaning if it is not mani cai, it is not really mee hoon kway to me 🤣 Cai sim 菜心 cannot lah, and Chinese spinach 苋菜 is even worse 🫢

BaBa's mani cai was nicely done. No raw green taste, and still had a bit of subtle crunch.

Tender hand made pork ball with sweetness of fresh pork.

The mushrooms used at hawker stalls usually have very little flavour, but BaBa's spongy fungus had a nice mushroom taste.

The soup though murky is the clean tasting cheng cheng 清清 type with a slight savoury sweet taste. It was not overly salty which I often find in other mee hoon kway places.

The fried shallot and anchovies were very fresh, almost grease free, light, crisp, savoury and aromatic.

The house made sambal was sharp - very spicy hot with sour zest and a bit of saltiness for balance.

Swee lah... .

Tender soft chewy Q弹 sweetish kuey complemented with subtly crunchy mani cai, umami savoury crispy fried anchovy, aromatic fried shallot topped with a dab of hot zesty sambal.

A delicious mouthful.

A humble comfort dish done sincerely. Come and try.
