SANG Seafood • HALAL Johor Chinese Restaurant • Memories of Old Danga Bay • Menu & Review📍Damansara Aliff 尚海鲜 清真 ☏ +6019 737 7556

Alice invited me to lunch with a group of friends at SANG Seafood, a Halal certified restaurant at Taman Damansara Aliff in Johor Bahru.

I rarely get to try Chinese Halal restaurants because there weren't that many in Johor, or even Malaysia.

The last one I went to was Mohd Chan in Ipoh. So I jumped at the opportunity to visit SANG Seafood at Damansara Aliff (which is at Singapore's doorstep).

It turned out to a great dining experience and a good catch up time with some of my JB kaki kaki.

SANG is not a big restaurant but bright, simply furnished, very clean and neat, and comfortable. The 70-seater is family friendly too.

I like the elegant understated ambiance and calm, relaxing vibes here. Soothing piano pieces in the background.

They managed to squeeze out a private corner 😀 (requires RM500 minimum spending).

Alice reminded us that SANG Seafood is the contemporary interpretation of Grand Seafood Senibong which I visited in 2019. Oh... I didn't know that before 😁

Grand Seafood Senibong was previously a kampung (village) style Muslim friendly zhi char restaurant at the shores of Danga Bay (before it was redeveloped beyond recognition). Many Singaporeans have memories of fighting through hours of Causeway traffic to have a nice seaside seafood meal at the old Danga Bay - I was one of them 😅🤣

Seafood at Danga Bay was very popular with the Muslim community. One of their regulars, Dato' M became good friends with Uncle J, owner of the popular seaside restaurant. Together, they opened Grand Seafood Senibong in 2019, and now SANG Seafood in 2025.

To cut the long story short, SANG Seafood today has the DNA and flavours of good old Danga Bay which drew thousands of Singaporeans to cross the Causeway for a nice seaside seafood meal in the 1990s 😁

I am so happy, as it is almost a miracle that I can taste today, the flavours from nearly 40 years ago at SANG Seafood. Dato' M and Uncle J make sure of that 🙏

We started with SANG's Three Treasures

I love SANG's signature Chili Crab.

The dish is made with 500-600 gram weight live mud crab.

SANG's chili crab was one of the best I have tried anywhere. The sauce was thick, loaded with onion, garlic, chili, tomato, eggs and other ingredients to form rich but balanced umami, sweet, tangy, spicy flavours.

SANG Seafood has made sure to maintain the same taste profile from 40 years ago.

The crustacean was meaty, clean tasting, naturally umami sweet. The meat had an exquisitely gentle soft spring to the bite (thanks to high quality live crabs).

Priced at RM98++ each, RM188++ for a pair, in my opinion, this dish alone is worth a trip to Damansara Aliff.

Fried Seabass with Nyonya Sauce. Price RM68++

Truth be told, I am a fan of neither seabass nor deep fried fish.

But, SANG's Fried Seabass with Nyonya Sauce is an exception.

The chef managed to serve a deep fried fish that was more crispy, light yet less oily than others. And, the blanket of signature spicy, zesty Nyonya sauce was rich with aromatics and spices. There was also no earthy taste which seabass fish sometimes have.

SANG Seafood's fried seabass with Nyonya sauce, I can eat!

Golden Nestum Prawn Cluster RM48++

The last and least photogenic of SANG's Three Treasures.

But, this is one of SANG Seafood's top sellers. Who wouldn't love big, meaty, tender, moist, crunchy, sweet deshelled prawns encased in a light, crisp, sweet, buttery cereal crust?

It was one of the dishes that was cleaned out the fastest..... Ladies...... .

The Red Snapper steamed Hong Kong style.

Oh... I love this dish a lot.

The fish was so fresh, steamed cooked with precision, its tender moist white flesh was naturally sweet. It was well complemented by a gently sweet savoury aromatic soupy sauce.

Crunchy Baby Squid with Honey Sauce. RM38++

Crunchy, then chewy. Sweet then umami savoury flavours as we continue to chew on the little squid fried with a blend of honey and savoury sauce. It tasted like candy at first, then like toasty grilled squid jerky.

One of my favourite dishes when eating in Johor Chinese restaurants is known as Indonesian Prawns 印尼虾. I always ask for it when eating in Johor 🫢

SANG Seafood's rendition was a winner.

The curry was rich, creamy, and the coconut sweetness was well balanced by umami savouriness from dried prawns (hae bee). The hot spices were also robust enough to make their presence felt. Furthermore, the prawns were deshelled.

Like that win already lor.... .

Black Pepper Crab RM98++ (1 piece), RM188++ (2 pieces).

The same good quality, meaty, sweet crab in a savoury peppery sauce.

Wok-Fried Lala Clams Kam Heong Style RM38++

Spicy savoury sweet aromatic flavours smothering very clean lala clam flesh. Taste was on point though the lala clams today were not as big and juicy as I like.

Tok Mak Bee Hoon Taucu.

A very nicely executed rice vermicelli dish with just prawns, bean sprouts, chives and soy sauce. Got toasty wok hei which seared the savoury sauces well onto the rice noodles.

Carol loves this but I ate the most of this dish 🫢

Chilled Ice Plant. Price RM28++

Fleshy, juicy, soft crunchy green dressed with a gently tangy sweet sauce.

Woah... I like this Milky Lala Soup with Ginger. Creamy sweet with lala umami savouriness and mild ginger & peppery heat. A steal at RM12.80++

They have fish maw soup, Sze Chuan soup, etc on the menu as well.

Carol admiring the SANG Seafood bowls. Get a pair with above RM300 spending.

Get this tote bag with RM500 spending.

Not bad lah... Nice food in a nice place get beautiful gifts (while stocks last) 😁

I am so happy today. Never expected to reconnect with a restaurant that excited me in the 1990s. Now in a contemporary modern setting, but most importantly the old taste profiles of Danga Bay, and quality of ingredients still remain. Thanks to the founders and the second generation who are committed to preserving their own legacy and customer trust as the first Halal Chinese seafood restaurant in Johor.
