Taiping Style Kway Teow Soup at Bukit Indah, Johor Bahru
Reader Keyin suggested that I try the Taiping style kway teow soup stall at Golden Plus One Kopitiam in Taman Bukit Indah, Johor Bahru.
We followed Keyin's directions and found the stall easily. The stall serves Taiping style chicken kway teow (hor fun) soup and prawn mee (which I cover in a separate post).
The busy stall is run by Wendy and her daughter who are from Taiping, Perak.
We started with a bowl of chicken kway teow soup.
The steaming hot kway teow soup was filled with rice noodles, generous shreds of white chicken meat, bean sprouts and chopped spring onions.
The clear broth made by boiling chicken and bones for hours was light bodied but flavoursome. The chicken meat was tender and had the natural sweetness of chicken. The bean sprouts were nicely done as they were crunchy and juicy. The rice noodle (kway teow) were average.
The chicken kway teow soup came with this small dish of excellent sambal chili. The sambal has hae bee (dried shrimp) savouriness and quite a hot sting from the chili. As I like my food with chili, this excellent sambal chili really give the kway teow soup a nice kick.
This is a nice chicken kway teow soup which I would gladly recommend.
Then, I suddenly recalled that Keyin said that in Taiping, the custom is to pour the sambal chilli into the chicken broth to make a "spicy soup". Keyin said, "Once try, really cannot stop!".
Curious to find out how that tastes, we ordered another bowl of chicken kway teow soup to try.
This time, I dumped the whole dish of sambal chili into the chicken broth.
We tossed and mixed the sambal chili thoroughly into the chicken broth.
The chicken kway teow soup after mixing the sambal chili. No, this is not MyKuali Penang white curry noodles though the look did remind me of it.
The savouriness of chicken and hae bee blended well with the spiciness of hot chili and other spices. This unique way of eating chicken kway teow soup is indeed truly enjoyable.
If you enjoy spicy food, this unique Taiping way of eating chicken kway teow soup is a Must Try.

visited this place 3rd November 2015. Soup is good and RM 5.00 was a reasonable price considering the amount given. She did not have chicken liver, gizzard or even chicken blood which we can get in Taiping. She says JB people don't know how to eat these things. The sambal was nice but a bit saltish. Overall, it did remind me of the dish I eat back in my hometown decades ago.
ReplyDeleteThank you for your comment. I hope to go to Taiping and taste this dish there soon. Do you have any stall you would recommend in Taiping :-D
DeleteUnfortunately aunty is no longer selling at this coffee shop, I really miss this dish. I wonder where is aunty now.
