There is something attractive about a beautiful mess.
Kishin-Tei Japanese restaurant in Johor Bahru's Grand Paragon Hotel just launched Rock & Shell on Table, their own Louisiana style seafood dinner.
We tried it last night and enjoyed it very much.
For RM138 nett, we get a two person serving of mixed seafood, choice of 3 different types of sauces, choice of 3 types of carbs, choice of dessert, chawanmushi for 2 and a jug of cold green tea to wash everything down.
At Kishin-Tei, there is a main dining hall and several private rooms. I think these cosy little rooms are great for Louisiana style seafood parties 🎉 🎂 😃
The staff lays the table with large plastic sheet and paper.
Japanese Chef Chua poured the bucket of seafood onto the table to our delight 😄
Chef Chua is a very experienced Japanese chef. Chef Chua started his 30+ years culinary career in the Japanese restaurant at PJ Hilton (near Kuala Lumpur) which later took him to Shangri-la KL, Genting Resort, Melbourne Australia, and Singapore before settling at Grand Paragon JB.
There is something about the primeval pleasure of eating with our 10 fingers, especially with family and friends.
Let's dig in 👐👐
Or, should it be dig out (the juicy goodies from inside the shells)?
Chef Chua has prepared 3 different house made sauces for the seafood - there is "Sweet & Spicy", "House Made Curry" and "Sweet & Sour".
Chef Chua steams the seafood, then stir fries them in the sauce, so all the natural seafood juices stay in the dish.
Tonight, we chose the "Sweet & Spicy" sauce. We like the sauce as it is well balanced - it's sweetness and mild spiciness is balanced with savoury crustacean juices from the crab, prawns and mussels. The sauce is also not overly intense, so we can still taste the natural seafood flavours. The "Sweet & Spicy" sauce reminded me of Singapore chili crab sauce.
Everything on the table was fresh as Chef Chua personally hand picks the seafood at the wet market every morning.
In the heap, there is crab, prawns, scallop, la la clams, mussel, bamboo clams, and squid. For vegetables, there is buttered sweet corn and broccoli.
Till 30 Sept 2016, the Rock & Shell on Table set comes with two abalones free.
For carbs, there are choices of steamed white rice, fried garlic rice and Chinese style fried buns.
We had the garlic fried rice - it had a nice garlic aroma and the flavoursome grains were tender with a firm nuttiness to the bite.
(We tried the Chinese fried buns too - they were delicious - crisp golden brown outside while the dense yet fluffy inside is soft and subtly sweet. The buns are perfect for mopping up the delicious sauces 😋)
Each Rock & Shell on Table set comes with 2 cups of chawanmushi. That piping hot Japanese egg custard is gently savoury eggy and oh... so light and smooth like hot jelly.
For dessert, we chose the house made matcha ice cream. There is also the choice of fruits.
We managed to finish every rock and shell on the table - there's quite a lot of delicious food for two persons. Shiok. The whole experience.
3-Star (out of 5). Kishin-Tei is a good place in JB to get your Louisiana style seafood dinner - the seafood is fresh, delicious, good value (especially with the free abalone promotion till 30 Sept 2016), the ambiance is nice and service is attentive.
