For many people in Malaysia and Singapore, the default breakfast is toast, soft boiled eggs and kopi in the neighbourhood kopitiam (coffee shop).
For folks of Taman Puteri Wangsa at Ulu Tiram, Restoran Sunshine kopitiam 新东升 is one of the local favourites. It's hard to get a table during weekends and it's busy even on weekdays.
Half century old Sunshine coffee shop is run by third generation owners now. There's the staple Nanyang coffee, tea, toasts and eggs, and stalls serving comfort dishes like wanton noodle, curry laksa, chee cheong fun (rice rolls) and nasi lemak (coconut flavour rice).
Good ol, old style Nanyang kopi O, pitch black, aromatic, round bodied, bitter balanced with sugar.
Nowadays, it's harder to get good old style Nanyang kopi. All too often, the kopi is adulterated with too much corn and the cuppa is made with too little coffee. So, we ended up with a watery bitter ashy tasting brew made barely drinkable with excessive white sugar or condensed milk.
Not so at Sunshine kopitiam. It's still the same old Nanyang full bodied, full flavour black coffee.
To me, there is something magical about perfectly done fresh soft boiled eggs.
A dribble of light soy sauce, a puff of spicy white pepper, and the drinkable eggy broth takes me back to the 1960s when I had my first soft boiled egg in a Singapore kopitiam very similar to Sunshine.
One of my favourite things at Sunshine kopitiam is their sambal toast.
Simple lightly toasted white bread sandwiching fried egg, crunchy fresh cucumber and that lovely mildly spicy homemade sambal with anchovies. This tastes exactly like those I had decades ago as a child.
Toast with not over sweet home made kaya and butter.
The nasi lemak, wanton mee, chee cheong fun, laksa, and yong tau foo stalls at Sunshine kopitiam are pretty good too, so there is something for everyone.
3-Star (out of 5). Sunshine kopitiam in Puteri Wangsa is one of my favourite places for Nanyang kopi, soft eggs and sambal toast.
My first visit to Sunshine coffee shop back in 2013. All the same stalls are still there today (2019), which attests to their enduring popularity with locals 👈 click
