Synthetic Pesticide Free Jin Feng Durian 金凤 from AnA Fruit Trading

Mao Shan Wang or Musang King is no doubt the king of durians in many people's hearts but Jin Feng 金凤, a very different durian, is often spoken of in the same breath and is even in the same price bracket. Jin Feng 金凤 fans swear by their durian like football fans' fierce loyalty to their favourite clubs.

Here is an old school Hainanese kopitiam which is well known to Ulu Tiram folks but still hidden under the radar from most people outside. I am fortunate that my Johor kakis John and Foo shared 衛生園茶餐室 kopitiam with me 😄
Pure Bean Coffee in Johor Bahru, Taman Gaya

Cafe hopping with coffee kaki Corrine and we hopped to Pure Bean Coffee in Taman Gaya, Ulu Tiram.
The layout and decor inside Pure Bean Coffee was simple, straightforward and familiar. Pure Bean is the sister cafe of Baristas Coffee in Kulai. Both cafes are different in concept, one in the country (Kulai) and the other in the city (JB), but the resemblance between the siblings was unmistakable.
The interior at Pure Coffee is understated, without the flamboyance and flair associated with trendy hipster cafes sprouting up everywhere nowadays.

The moment I stepped into Pure Bean for the first time, I felt I've been here before.
Sometimes, neat and simple is what we need and prefer.
The familiar food could be part of it.

Right at the entrance was this tray of quintessentially English crumbly buttery scones made by owner Mr Foo, who is also a pastry chef. (Scones are also available at Baristas Cafe in Kulai.)
The buttery scones reminded Corrine of her New Zealand uni days...

Belgian waffle with vanilla ice cream and fresh strawberry topping. The waffle is the stiffer, slightly chewy kind, not the airy almost fluffy type.
A very pretty and nice sweet dessert.

My cuppa cappuccino.
Made with Johor grown Liberica and Robusta, the brew's body was heavy and taste was robust with a bittersweet aftertaste. (No sugar added - I only add sugar to instant coffee and Nanyang kopitiam coffee.)

I like this cold brew of Columbian Arabica blended with Robusta. The cold brew was fermented for 3 days, giving it a subtle alcoholic and herbal undertone. The Arabica gave the coffee a caramel sweetness and chocolaty bittersweetness with citrusy notes. The Robusta gave the blend a caffeine kick which I like.

Pure Bean does a brisk business of hot and cold take away coffees.

My ice coffee made with Columbian and Kenyan AA Arabica blend. Bittersweet flavour with citrusy pamelo aftertaste.

Pure Bean is a cosy place to cool your heels and chat with friends over nice pastries and good coffee. Wifi and handphone charging points available.
Thank you Mr Foo for your invite.

Sun Kopitiam in Ulu Tiram, Johor 东升

Most locals in Ulu Tiram (north of Johor Bahru) are familiar with Sun Kopitiam 东升 which has been here for over 30 years.

The local townsfolk like to gather here to catch up over breakfast as they have always done, all these years.
For people driving from Singapore or Johor Bahru to Desaru, Mersing, or Kuantan, Sun Kopitiam is a convenient breakfast stop. I was last here with the Militia Riders Motorcycle Club during our food trail to Kluang.
The present owner, Mr Foo is the third generation. Mr Foo's aunt runs Sunshine kopitiam in nearby Taman Puteri Wangsa selling the same signatures.
Sun Kopitiam's signature nasi lemak.
Very simple - just rice cooked with coconut milk, slices of cucumber and a few fried peanuts, a fried egg and a dollop of sambal. Regulars have been enjoying this for years.

This sambal chili stood out in the otherwise quite ordinary nasi lemak. The sambal was a good blend of sweet, savoury and mildly spicy with a pronounced anchovy flavour.

Sun kopitiam's butter and homemade kaya toast. Well executed.

Sun kopitiam's signature sambal toast.

It was simply a sandwich of toasted white bread with fried egg and sambal chili spread.
Sun kopitiam enjoys a huge following for this sambal toast.

I love runny soft boiled eggs for breakfast :D

Sun coffee shop's half boiled eggs were perfectly done.

Bitter local coffee given body, aroma and sweetness by large dollops of milky sweetener.

Coffee served here is the "Television brand" old school Nanyang blend of Robusta beans roasted with corn, sugar, margarine and other add ons.

The Sun kopitiam signboard is partially hidden by the large clump of leafy bamboo on the left.
For people driving from Singapore or Johor Bahru heading north to Mersing, Desaru or Kuantan, Sun Kopitiam is a convenient and pleasant breakfast stop.
东升 coffee shop founder Mr Foo's wife cooks just one small pot of bak kut teh on Sunday and it is usually sold out by 10am. If you like to try home cooked Ah Mah BKT with your coffee, come early on Sunday. It tastes nice and the experience is special 👈 click

Nasi Padang at Tiram Klasik Corner in Johor Bahru, Ulu Tiram

This morning we were exploring Ulu Tiram, looking for good food. We stumbled upon Tiram Klasik Corner at the junction of Jalan Cempedak and Jalan Duku (near the bus terminal).
I took a quick look at the nasi padang dishes on display and the wide range of freshly cooked dishes convinced me to give Tiram Klasik Corner a try.
This turn out to be one of the best nasi padang places that I have tried so far in Johor.

The owner of Tiram Klasik Corner, Tok Esa is the village headman of the area. Tok Esa's wife who hails from Padang, leads the kitchen and does most of the cooking personally.

Follow me on a quick survey of the dishes at Tiram Klasik Corner. It has one of the widest range of dishes at the nasi padang shops that I have seen, so far.
This is just a sampling of the dishes available.

Beef rendang, the signature of nasi padang.

I am one of those people who are guilty of judging nasi padang stalls by their beef rendang.
Doesn't this look amazing?

Beef tendons cooked in curry.

Huge curry fish heads.

Ikan pari (slabs of stingray) soaking in fiery looking asam pedas.

The fried catfish was very well prepared. Crispy outside while the white flesh was moist, sweet and soft. The hot chili added further kick to the tasty fish.

I was very happy to see this large bowl of freshly cooked siput. Siput is one of my favourite dishes :D

This sambal chili was simply awesome. Sweetness fused with layers of spiciness from the onions, tomatoes and different types of pulpy ground chili blended together.
I can have a happy meal eating this alone with plain white rice.
No joke.
Great achar.
Fresh crunchy sweet, spicy and tangy chopped vegetables tossed in vinegar and sugar.

The custom here in Johor is for the customer to help themselves with the parade of food laid out in trays, large bowls and pots. A staff will go around the tables to total up the bill.

Round one, simple white rice with my favourites fried catfish, egg plant and bitter gourd all cooked with lots of fiery pound chili.
I liked everything on this plate. Loved the fried catfish so much that I ate another one right after finishing this.

Round two, my favourite beef rendang, achar, tempe and banana shoot with rice.

The aroma from the spice perfumed beef was truly alluring but the meat was the chewy kind - like a softer form of beef jerky.

Siput is one of my favourite traditional Malay dishes. I must have it whenever it is available.
Here at Tiram Klasik Corner, the siput was very fresh and very well cleaned. There wasn't the slightest trace of sand or grit.
We really enjoyed ourselves at Tiram Klasik Corner. The food was excellent - fresh and well prepared, the service was friendly and prices were very reasonable.
I also like it that the food at Tiram Klasik Corner was tasty but not overly greasy or salty.
The best time to be here for nasi padang is just before noon with the food freshly prepared :D

Definitely a Must Try for nasi padang lovers.
