Seeing Henry's regular postings from his favourite lunch haunt near the bus terminal at Masai in JB, we couldn't resist checking it out.
Jalan Bunga Ros. Masai 巴士车站对面.
It's actually one of two nameless makeshift stalls set up at an extension of a house along Jalan Bunga Ros.
Zero decor. Just a collection of foldable tables and plastic stackable chairs. The main clientele is the workers in the Masai area.
Stall holder Mr Tay hails from Penang and have been working in restaurants and food stalls for over 30 years. Mr Tay once sells clay pot chicken rice, hence you will see many clay pot dishes at his stall.
Many people come to Mr Tay's stall for "economy rice" and porridge. Mr Tay makes 6 or 7 side dishes to eat with rice or porridge.
We started with this noodles with braised pork and thicken braising stock 卤肉面 which is Henry's favourite.
It's layers of savoury sweetness and softness from the gooey stock, yellow noodles, braised pork, braised tofu and wedges of braised egg. Lard and lard crackling added more porcine flavour into the mix. If you like a bit of tanginess, add a dash of black vinegar.
We enjoyed this lor bak noodle 卤肉面 as much as Henry does 😋
Mr Tay suggested that we also try his clay pot noodle 砂锅面.
If the lor bak noodle is all soft and gooey, the clay pot noodle has more varied textures. The house made sio bak has tender meat and fat with crispy skin. Soft sweet yam, fish cake slices, and mushroom. The prawn, cabbage, cauliflower, carrot add juicy crunch to the dish. The soft slurpy yellow noodles sat in a pool of savoury sauce with sweet notes. Again, shake in some vinegar if you like a bit of sourness in your noodles.
Seeing Mr Tay in action with the smoking wok, we decided to order an Ipoh hor fun. I have often lamented about how difficult it is to find a good Ipoh hor fun nowadays.
We were so glad that we did, because this is one Ipoh hor fun that we have been looking for. One we would come back for.
The simple kway teow has a subtle roasty toasty taste we know as wok hei 锅气.
The well balanced savoury sweet eggy garlicky sauce was also delicious.
Two of us. We cleaned up everything. Worth every calorie. All for RM20. Worth every sen.
3-Star (out of 5). If you are hungry around Masai, Johor, come here at Jalan Bunga Ros for a good lunch or dinner at reasonable prices. The clay pot noodles are good and the Ipoh hor fun by a 30 year hawker veteran is one of the best I've tasted in Singapore and Johor.
Mr. Tay's stall is along Jalan Bunga Ros directly opposite Masai bus and taxi terminal. (There is another Jalan Bunga Ros nearby in Plentong. That is not the one.)

Thanks brother for contributing to Masai economy again! Masai is an old town which has passed its golden era. 20 or 30 years ago it used to be a food heaven with legendary hawkers. While most of the legends are now already retired, you can be assured of good taste from those hawkers surviving till today.
ReplyDeleteThank you! It's my pleasure brother. We are just having fun and enjoying good food with friends. Bro, please share with us more goodies in Masai :-D
