The Pudu neighbourhood in Kuala Lumpur is a fascinating treasure trove of old school flavours and aromas. It's been decades since I first roamed these gritty streets and every time, I still stumble upon new tastes that excite me.

As we staked out Pudu again for food this morning, our car rolled slowly into the gravel parking lot between two blocks of old four storey flats. We were drawn deeper in by the food stalls at the end of the apartment block.

Local folks were enjoying breakfast here, in the cool of the morning. Familial banter in Cantonese filled the air.

Stall holder Ah Lun was busy cooking several pots of fish noodles at the same time. The menu (in Chinese) hangs over the kitchen. There is Song fish, Grouper fish, prawn, frog, pork intestines and pork liver on the menu.

Ah Lun told me that his shop is known as Ring Road Restaurant 玲律茶餐室 (but I couldn't spot any signboard outside in English). Ah Lun's dad ran the 30 year old stall in Pudu until he took over the reins about 3 years ago (2016).

Ring Road Restaurant now has an air conditioned section as well as the al fresco section outside.

We started with a bowl of Song fish belly, Mackerel fish paste and bee hoon in a broth (for RM9 in 2016).

One spoonful of this savoury sweet chicken and anchovy broth spiked with Chinese cooking wine, and we were hooked.

The fatty Song fish belly was very fresh, soft and smooth. It is sweet with slight characteristic earthiness of Song fish. Song fish is an acquired taste and I like it 😆

We enjoyed this Mackerel fish paste 马鲛鱼滑. It is dense and bouncy with mild savouriness and slight fresh fish flavour.

Our bowl of Song fish head bee hoon 鱼头米 for RM7 (2016 price). Same soft and sweet meat with characteristic Song fish earthiness. The skin and gelatine from the bony head added to our enjoyment. Just be very careful about the razor sharp head bones.

We like the springy Mackerel fish paste 马鲛鱼滑 so much that we ordered another bowl for RM6 (2016 price).

👉 The lady boss (Ah Lun's sister Ah Mun) seeing that we were new to this place, how we enjoyed our food and how I was so curious about their shop asked us where we are from. I said that I enjoyed their food and the entire experience as I have not come across a dish like this and served in this way in Singapore. I said I always enjoyed visiting KL because of eateries like her Ring Road Restaurant.
