Food Guide to Pudu Wai Sek Kai Glutton Street • 4 Eyes Fried Chicken 半山芭 • 为食街 • 四眼仔胜利炸

4 Eyes Fried Chicken is perhaps the most popular stall in Pudu's legendary glutton street or Wai Sek Kai. WSK is a side street off Jalan Pudu and its official name is Jalan Sayur (which means Vegetable Street in Malay).

"Vegetable Street" was the original wet market of Pudu before it moved to its present location (at Pasar Pudu Baharu). Cooked food stalls replaced vegetable stalls after the latter moved to Pasar Pudu Baharu but the name Jalan Sayur remained.

I always love Hakka noodles - so simple - egg noodles sauced with lard and soy sauce topped with fried minced pork and eat with wanton soup. So comforting, tasty, filling and affordable.

Two years ago while prowling around KL's Pudu neighborhood for good food, I stumbled upon An Kee Chicken & Roast Meat Rice stall. The royal yellow colour chicken in the window looked so enticing.

One of my objectives for coming back to Pudu this time, was to document my favourites when I was living in KL nearly 30 years ago.

One of them was a yong tau foo shop. I couldn't remember anything except that the dining area was long, narrow, and air conditioned (no the norm in Pudu at that time). Its business card had a fish or fish bone motif.

Keong Kee Herbal Soups is one of the type of places I travel for - We won't get exactly the same dishes and very unlikely to get this type of setting and vibes in Singapore now.

Three days in Kuala Lumpur, I decided to go in-depth on food in the Pudu neighborhood. As Pudu has a sizable Cantonese population, so claypot chicken rice is a popular dish here.

There are three well known claypot chicken rice places in Pudu. Yan Kee, 168, and this - Foong Lian 丰年.

When we were living in KL, charcoal cooked claypot chicken rice was one of our favourite local dishes.

In Pudu, we liked Heun Kee and 168. Over in Petaling Jaya, we had another couple of favourites but I forgot their names. Yeah, before I retired, I didn't pay attention to what's famous and what big names. Just know what we enjoyed and where.

Mun Kee Steam Fish Head in Pudu Kuala Lumpur 文记鱼头王蒸鱼头 半山芭

One of my favourite things to eat in Kuala Lumpur is steamed Song fish head. The dish is popular with oldies 🤭 and quite common in Kuala Lumpur. We came to Pudu, an old gritty section of KL, to look for it 😁 (Actually we went to Jalan Peel first but the place has completely transformed and all our old favourite street side steamed fish places are gone 🥹 )

Eating Roast Goose in KL @ Chen Chen BBQ Goose, Duck in Pudu 珍珍深井烧鹅鸭鸡

While we were in Kuala Lumpur, buddy SW wondered if we could get some nice roast goose. As usual, I turned to my Facebook friends for help. Chen Chen BBQ Goose, Duck in Pudu came up in the list of suggestions. We picked it because it was on our route and fit in our day's plans.

Wong Mei Kee in Pudu KL - The Best Roast Pork in Malaysia & Singapore? 王美记燒肉

Wong Mei Kee 王美记燒肉 have long been on my Eat List as many buddies swear by it - many declaring it the best roast pork in Malaysia and Singapore. I finally got to taste Wong Kee's legendary siu yok or sio bak - missing it many times before because the roast meat was always sold out within 1, at most 2 hours.

Tong Lian Kee Hokkien Mee (Tai Lok Meen) @ Jalan Sarawak in Pudu KL 东莲记福建面

It was the end of our whole day food trail from JB to KL, after our fourth meal. Every meal was great but it would not be right if we did not taste a Hokkien mee or tai lok meen when we were in KL.

Running through the dozens of popular options, I reminisced about a Hokkien mee stall that operated along the corridor at a side street off Jalan Pudu. We decided to go and check it out, though I actually assumed that it was no longer there (just like the mee hoon kueh stall across the road from it).
