(CLOSED, owners want to travel and see the world.) Dropped by at the famous Da Jie wanton mee at the junction of Jalan Besar and Sam Leong Road near Singapore's Little India.
Da Jie Famous wanton mee is a stall inside Sin Yew Huat Eating House which is a laid back coffee shop at the fringe of Singapore's Central Business District.
Singapore still has precious swathes of charming pre-war shop houses in the shadow of looming steel and glass towers.
Ordering at Da Jie Famous wanton mee is easy as 1, 2, 3, ... really. The menu is right above our heads at the counter and the different options are numbered 1 to 8. After I took a while to decide which to order, the friendly young lady politely suggested that I might try number 2 which has a bit of everything 😃
So I went along with her suggestion and was
After paying for our order, customers are given this pager. We return to our seats and go back to the counter to collect our orders when the pager flashes and buzzes. Very convenient 😃
Number 2, the all-in-one set 😃
The mound of slender egg noodles were topped with a chicken feet, a black mushroom, char siew slices, fried wantons and some blanched stalks of crunchy greens. I tossed in some lard cracklings.
The mound of noodles sat on a layer of sambal chili paste, soy sauce and lard.
The generic noodles were done a little soft, so the noodles were slightly limp today. The sauce was quite robust with a blend of savoury and spicy flavours plus the taste of lard. The skinny strands were well enveloped with flavoursome sauce which smeared my lips with grease as I slurped up the slick noodles. The spiciness was a little sharp with a fleeting light sting. I enjoyed this sauce 😋
The char siew looked a bit anaemic and dry but they were actually quite tasty with their savoury flavour.
The little stewed black mushroom was saturated with braising sauce. Biting into the spongy button squeezes out the warm dark juices, splashing it's earthy savoury flavours on our taste buds 😋 Delicious.
Da Jie generously let customers help themselves to these crispy lard cracklings 😃 But, I just took these temptations in moderation lah 😇
The little shank dropped off at the ankle when I picked up this floppy chicken claw 😆 It's that soft lor 😂
The chicken claws were deep fried to crispiness and then stewed in a soy sauce and aromatic spice blend till even the bones were soft. I ate this whole claw - bones, cartilage, tendon, skin and all. It was yummey!
Crispy fried wanton.
The soup has a little body and was sweet with a touch of savouriness. It's nice 😋
Thumb size wanton with a soft ball of minced pork inside slightly thick wrap.
👉 There is a lot to like in Da Jie's wanton mee. It's comforting that in high cost Singapore, we are still able to enjoy such a satisfying meal at an affordable price in the city centre. I like the feisty sauce, wantons, char siew, stewed chicken feet and mushrooms. It would be perfect for me if the noodles had slightly more spring to the bite today. Next time, I shall indulge in their stewed chicken claws and mushrooms 😃
