Ho Seng Kee has a unique style of wanton noodles which to it's many fans is synonymous with JB wanton mee.
After decades in Taman Century, Ho Seng Kee moved into City Square mall last year (just beside the JB CIQ). Started as a stall 80 years ago at Jalan Meldrum, the shop in City Square is run by third generation owner Elton Ho.
Ho Seng Kee is on level 6 (the roof level) of Johor Bahru City Square. The food court and Japan Street are also on level 6.
Inside Ho Seng Kee, the decor is contemporary, bright, simple and comfortable.
The noodles come with different options of sauces from "original" to spicy, "black" to soup. I opted for "original" with chili sauce on the side in a plastic dish.
One bite into Ho Seng Kee's house made egg noodles and all of us would agree that it is unique. Many would even say that it is the best. The egg noodles made with a blend of chicken and duck eggs are flat and slender with a nice bouncy tender crunch to the bite.
I like the original sauce with is basically lard, sesame oil, oil and a bit of light soy. It's the sauce that allows me to focus on the subtle flavours of Ho Seng Kee's noodles.
If you opt for the house blended chili sauce, it has a sweet savouriness with a lingering sharp sting. It's hot. It also has an interesting fruity zing from secret ingredients.
Ho Seng Kee's wantons are good sized. The minced pork is finely grounded and packed densely, quite unlike the traditional wanton in texture and flavour. Personally, I prefer the old school spongy texture with sesame oil and pepper marination.
The char siew slices are thin and quite dry. Slight savoury sweet flavour.
The medium body bone broth is savoury sweet.
We also had the soup version.
The same bouncy soft crunchy noodles, now more slurpy and slippery with the savoury sweet soup.
The wanton skin wrapping a tasty fresh shrimp and minced pork is smooth and quite thick.
👉 Our total bill for two bowls of wanton mee with drinks came to RM23.90. A premium price for wanton mee but the service was good, environment nice and it's quality egg noodles only available from Ho Seng Kee.
I actually wrote 3 different blog posts for Ho Seng Kee.
The first in 2012 was one of the earliest posts in Johor Kaki. They were still in Taman Century then 👈 click
The third and most recent one was in 2017 because a friend misses her long time favourite wanton mee 👈 click

ReplyDeleteDavy Koh on Facebook "Most wanton mee in JB are RM5.50 or RM6.50...small & big bowl respectively so this is a bit expensive...in shopping mall I suppose. I like to patronise Tien Tien kopitiam wanton mee at Pelangi...a small bowl wanton mee with 3 extra chicken feet only RM7.50. Good deal and very delicious".
ReplyDeleteChristopher Lam on Facebook, "The best wantan mee I ever taste".
ReplyDeleteKumaresan Balakrishnan on Facebook, "I miss the days, not too long ago mind you, where you can get awesome wantan mee for RM3.50. even in KL you can get wantan me with extra char Siew way better than this for RM6".
ReplyDeletePhil Cuore on Facebook "Please don't agung-agungkan stall that sell expensive food ... expensive doesn't means great, it's the factor only aka "sing li zhuo yong" those low in faith will count on all these factor, well' everyone knows and have their favorite won ton Mee that is cheap and nice or always nicer then this ... u know I know so don't over praised the really overly priced wonton mee seller, it really makes them think they should raise to RM20 a bowl in the future ... ibohausiaw (just my 2 cent, I know truth hurts)".
ReplyDeleteDear Phil, thank you for your comment. This is just one of 38 wanton mee articles in my blog. I try to give readers as much information and choices as possible - there is something for different budgets and tastes >>> http://johorkaki.blogspot.com/search/label/Wanton%20Mee
DeleteWent for lunch yesterday. Not packed as usual. The quality has gone down tremendously. The mee is too slender and not bouncy. Previously cook by the boss. Now by employees. It appeared the mee is not tossed dry enough. The soup has lost it umami flavor. I hope the boss will get back the old flavor or else the brand will not last
